lug nut broken off-stuck on stud.
as the title says i have a lug nut that is broken off on my stud and i cannot get it off. here is what i have tried- i used a "gator grip" socket to try and bite into it and back it off and it actually just rounded it off more. i would just cut the stud but it is recessed inside the hole of the rim on my rota gt3s.. so im out of options. someone please help. thanks in advance.

Re: lug nut broken off-stuck on stud.
same thing happened to me. might need to take it into a shop. they either weld a piece of another lug and get it off or hammer it off with a chisel. my local shop, which sucks, did it for like $20 cauz they have a spot welder...
hope this helps

yeah if there is enough that you can see you can try and tap it loose with a chisel until you can just unscrew it with your fingers

ill try to take a picture in a minute- its currently raining cats and dogs.. but i dont think i will be able to go at it with a chisel because of how close it is to my wheel and how far in there it is broken off.. do you think i could drill the stud out?

You can try one of these... http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...2061000P?mv=rr
I put it on my impact gun, and a problem caliper bolt on my moms van came right out!

yea thats what ive already used and it rounded it off worse.. so my only option is drilling the stud i guess.. if that can be done?

Re: lug nut broken off-stuck on stud.
sorry as i stated it was raining all day and i was unable to post a picture. it is a "Vision" brand open-ended lug nut... the only part that is left on it is the "acorned" part that gets bigger right before it mates to the surface of the wheel to hold it down. so nothing is left to grip or hold on to that would make it possible to back it off.. only option is drill, air hammer it, or somehow take off the whole knuckle with the wheel still on it and cut the stud from the back side.

Re: lug nut broken off-stuck on stud.
don't laugh
but how thick is it?
place a nother lug nut on an adjacent nut (opposit location) loose like 1 rotation
it's only there to keep the rim from falling off... kinda
rotate the loose good lug nut to the top position (broken one in the bottom possition)
and than beat the **** out of the inside of the rim with a rubber mallet
it will work
depending on how thick the remaining broken lug nut is...
LMK

the remaining part is pretty thick but im willing to try this.. i follow you up until where you say beat the inside of the rim with a rubber mallet.. by this do you mean the side opposite the face side.. (side facing the other side of the car)? im thinkin this might work but this lug is on there fairly think and im thinking i might not be able to get enough force behind it

Re: lug nut broken off-stuck on stud.
get a bigger mallet ha ha
and yes hit it from the inside out
it the lug nut (broken one) on there tight...
i know dumb question but i gotta ask
stick something int here to determin how thick it is like 1/4"?
if it's to think your wasting your time is why i ask
i gotta deal with retarded **** like this all the time (i work at Firestone).
if that don't work there is another way that works but i have never tried because you run a rick of breaking something
an that's jacking it up and knocking it down and break the stud...
your not going to accomplish anything by drilling it out because it's a stud
unless you drill it out all the way to the threads... you have fun with that ha ha
take a picture of this ****
I'm telling ya there is a way to remove it by unscrewing it / the easy way
ya just gotta figure it out
and if not breaking the stud with an impact
speaking of an impact gun you are using one correct?

Yeah like above. Impact gun.
AND bolt extractor. If it rounds off, use the next smallest one. Tap it on with a hammer to get it to bite, then hit it with the impact, and it will snug up the rest of the way.

Re: lug nut broken off-stuck on stud.
ya with the exception of a cross threaded lug nut
the bolt extractors or a next size down 12 point socket has worked
however i have the mack daddy snap on impact gun
can't remember the model right now but something like 1097 ft./lbs. bolt breakaway is handy ha ha

Re: lug nut broken off-stuck on stud.
can you pound a smaller socket on it? ive done it in the past works great.. although i always loose the socket i pound on, its still cheaper then paying someone. also sears have a lugnut removal kit but its about $60 - 120

Jeremie, how much psi does it take to get that high??
Also, I remember back in the days I used to work at Discount, (not for very long tho lol) that they would use a cold chisel and 5lb sledge and hit it just right and the bolt would snap off at the lug, if the impact and extractors failed. (crossed threads like you said)
You'd have to replace the lug stud, but it was better than loosing the rim, and knuckle etc.

and ya you will lose the smaller socket
but surprisingly enough the Stanly Wallmart sockets hold up to this great
i used one (1) to remove 4 wheel locks last week and it still looks great
but it's gotta be a 12 point for some reason
they just work better when hammering them on
