Default High picth metallic whine after having work done on car...

Had the water pump replaced about 3 weeks ago. I rarely drive this car. Since I got the car back I maybe have made two or three short trips to the store and back. Anyways, today my wife pulls in to the drive way and I hear this metallic high pitch whine. Pulled the belts and it still makes the noise, so not the idler pulley or alternator, ac, etc. It only makes it after it has warmed up for a few minutes. It goes away when the fan kicks in or other load. If you goose the throttle it goes away. It currently only makes the noise at idle. Very high pitched. I wonder if the tech over tightened the timing belt??? The belt and pump and timing pulley tightener have less than 8k miles on them - and were oem parts. The water pump actually failed under 12k miles which the honda place I took it to found strange. Anyways, they supposedly replaced the water pump with an oem one. At the time of the repairs they asked if I wanted the belt etc all replaced, I declined as they were basically new. They checked it out after removing the cover and said they still looked new, no need to replace.

Now, if I take it back in, and they find that the belt was over tightened, should I ask for a new tensioner pulley?

Does that sound like a tensioner that has been over tightened? The rest of the drive belts were f'ing tight...

Check the tension yourself, pop the valve cover and have a look.
Check the guides in the FAQ's under tbelt guides for specifics.

Thanks. Does the "whine" sound like the t-belt tensioner or water pump? I pulled the drive belts and the noise continues... You can only hear it after it has run for a while and at idle. When a load is applied the noise goes away, when throttle is applied the noise goes away... thanks.

Since it has only been a few weeks since this job was done, in which I have not put that many miles on the vehicle, should I be concerned with having the belt replaced? The belt was not new when they installed the pump, but it was less than 1.5 years old, and maybe (maybe) 8K miles on it. At the very least should they replace the tensioner? It sounds like metal on metal at this point... thanks.

IMO, any time you service the water pump or t-belt, I'd address the tensioner as well.

The belt tensioner has ball bearings within it that if bad, will cause a WORLD of pain when they finally shatter / seize.
See: Skipped belt, broken belt.

Thanks. I wish the shop would have told me that. $hit, I hope they don't charge me again! They told me to bring it in and they would look at it... it made NO NOISE prior to them working on it... only issue I had was a minor leak in the pump - defective Honda OEM pump less than 2 years old and 8K miles...

Yeah, sorry about your luck.
let them do their 'examination' and see what they turn up.
If they say it'll be XXX$ more to fix the tensioner, I'd then begin spouting that it's common practice to change them when you service anything relating to the timing belt.

Good luck.
