Emissions legal turbo?? heck yeah! check out these results!
Well, with my registration due tomorrow, I went and had a standard smog check, as per California State laws, the first one I had to do since its now 5 years olds. For those of you who don't live here, a car doesn't have to be smogged checked until 5 years from the date of purchase, or when it changes ownership, then its checked every two years.
My car:
00 Civic EX (D16Y8) with 98,500 miles
New cat was installed 18 months ago before the turbo @ 68,000 miles
Edelbrock turbo kit @ 7psi, intalled @ 70,000 miles
Smog Test Results:
15mph (1943 rpm)
%CO2: Measured = 14.7
%O2: Measured = 0
HC (PPM): Max allowed = 64, Average = 9, Measured = 28
%CO: Max allowed = .55, Average = .02, Measured = .03
NO (PPM): Max allowed = 477, Average = 57, Measured = 0
25mph (2007 rpm)
%CO2: Measured = 14.6
%O2: Measured = 0
HC (PPM): Max allowed = 47, Average = 7, Measured = 14
%CO: Max allowed = .54, Average = .03, Measured = .02
NO (PPM): Max allowed = 764, Average = 50, Measured = 0
I was very happy to see those numbers! With how many miles I have put on it with the turbo, and how hard I like to drive, I was worried.
It was also nice to know that the Edelbrock turbo kit will run that clean in the long term!

Yes, the kit is CARB E.O. legal. The smog tech just smogged it without even checking it until after he ran it.

Guess I should clarify that.
The emissions test was done on rollers. So it was a small dyno used to smog test the car under load.

I do not believe the Eldelbrock turbo is 50 states legal. On the Edelbrock website it says its pending.

If you had read it and not skimmed you would have seen they said kit #1500 is 50 state legal.
Kit #1500 = 96 - 00 civic ex

I passed IL state emissions with flying colors with a B18A with a modified drag 3 kit, no cat, and hondata untuned. the trick is to go there with expensive wheels.. i went in there on my volks and they didn't put it on the rollers, they just parked it and revved it that way the turbo didn't get to spool, and therefore minimal emissions!

IMO on most turbo kits if its done and tuned correctly you will pass. the #1 thing that kills people in CA is the visual inpection, which is only ment to make the government more money.
if your car passes the sniffer test it should be all good, IMO. but when you get bueacrats involved money talks.
to you marauder

Well, my 96 Integra barely passed emissions with only a short ram intake.
I think that replacing the stock injectors is what kills most emissions with performance upgrades. Using the stock injectors and adding fuel with the secondaries is what really helps the Edelbrock kit be so clean at normal emissions tests. Now, if they did a wide open throttle test.....like they will start doing on 04+ model years!
