D16Z6 Valve Guides - What size sleeves/liners do I get?
I've got my D16Z6 head in the machine shop getting it resurfaced and a valve job. I already knew I needed valve guides and seals because the exhaust valves have a TON of play. Anyways, the machinist suggested getting sleeves/liners instead of doing all new guides like I planned because pressing in new guides is risky because of the aluminum head.
Down to the point. What size sleeves/liners do I get? Where can I find them? Or do any of you guys have any other suggestions?

Re: Question About Valve Guides
He doesn't really know, he said to just buy them online and he showed me some that were suitable for a V8 Chevrolet. I've found some sleeves I just need to know the size.

Re: Question About Valve Guides
I don't know about sleeves. Replacing the guides seems like the proper fix whereas installing sleeves sounds a bit janky and more like a band-aid fix. Figuring out what kind of guides your car uses should be as simple as looking at the service manual. Hell, you can probably get on O'Reilly's website, search for guides and punch in your car info and the proper intake/exhaust guides should come up.

Yea, here you go.

Not sure what year Civic you have, but these are for a 92-95 Civic EX with a D16Z6 engine. Apparently for your D16Z6, unlike my D15B7, the intake and exhaust guides are the same size.
Pressing in new guides shouldn't be a problem for a reputable machine shop, honestly. Many heads are made of aluminum. The manual instructs you to heat the head to 300F and place the guides in the freezer for an hour or so and then just drive them in with a guide driver.

I guess since nobody knows about the liners I'll just take a risk with the guides. The reason why he doesn't want to do it is because theres a high risk of cracking the head or the guides not staying in. *Crosses fingers*

The riskiest part is getting the old guides out. And it's only really risky if they have to drill them. For an experienced machinist, it really shouldn't be too much trouble, either way.

Alright, thanks guys. Unfortunately it's the only machine shop in my area with reasonable prices but hopefully he won't eff it up.

when I got my gsr head rebuilt, I just bought new guides made by Supertech (recommended over kms, different type of bronze), and they put them in. It was my understanding this was a pretty routine job...

He might be perfectly capable... he might just not want to do it for whatever reason, who knows. Laziness? Unwillingness to work on "them Jap imports"? The machine shop down the road happily resurfaced my cylinder head when I did my head gasket, and everybody was really nice and courteous. They are very reputable around here and have great rates. After I picked it up, though, the machinist was heading out and commented something to the effect of "Man, I don't know how you work on those import cars. I couldn't do it". I was thinking to myself, "It's a Honda, it's not rocket science. They're put together in much the same way as any other car." I think what I actually said, though, was "Eh, it's not nearly as tough as you might think."
Anyway, my point is he might be making excuses to not do work he doesn't want to. Sounds like you should find a shop in the next over if that's the only one around. From everything you've said, I wouldn't trust them with my parts...

Ok so I brought the block up there to have it bored over. It's just bare-*** block, nothing on it, no girdle, no crankshaft, nothing. Well after he noticed it didn't have a girdle he said he needed that to attach it to the honer. Well that's coming off the engine I'm using right now but he spazzed out and said "that's a no no". Is it true that I can't use those parts from the other engine? He said the crankshaft and the bearings are coded to the engine and you can't interchange them because it will tear the engine to pieces. So he wouldn't take the block in and told me to find another one that is complete with a crank and so on. It seems like I've heard of people changing these out between engines before, I dunno.

These cars are more 'Murrican than they may think, a good hunk of them are co-designed between the R&D facilities based out of Raymond, OH and LA and of course, some over seas in Japan.
The plant in Raymond cranks out TONS of Accords and CR-V's. Most of the Civics are done elsewhere of course... but most of your parts? sourced within the US, I know of four or five separate plants here in OH alone that crank stuff out for Honda, everything from bolts to seats; point is, "Them there jap cars" support our economy more than other companies like Chevy (See: HHR, built in Mexico, IMPORTED to USA)

Re: D16Z6 Valve Guides - What size sleeves/liners do I get?
I got chased out of my Uncle's house after I took a couple of the guys out to the driveway at a family picnic and pointed out that my Honda was the only car in the driveway (out of 11) made in America. They're all hardcore SUPPORT AMERICA, and used to only buy Chevy and Ford.
On the plus side, my aunt just got a Honda minivan. At least I'm getting somewhere with them

Tech: Do some research and get opinions on your guide / sleeve issues.
