Default D16y7 Problems

Ok well I've looked around the net for some possible solutions to this but have really no luck. Anyways I bought a 98 hatchback for the purpose of swapping, but before I do I wanna make it driveable so I can take it to places to fix some of the body issues before I swap. Anyways, I drove the car home around 30 miles to my house and it drove fine. I had it cruising at like 80. I drove it a little the next day and it seemed like it was running hot. Then I went to take it down to vaccum it at the carwash. I got about a half mile from my house and there was a really loud sputtering from the exhaust and the car wouldn't go above 25 in 2nd gear. I got home and the headers were glowing red lol. I thought I had blown the headgasket because it was running really weird after that like it would start and as soon as I would give it gas it would either rev up then die or just die all together.

Anyways I replaced the head gasket and still it runs the same way. I rev it and it dies or it just dies when I rev it. If it's sitting at idle it's idling super rough to where the whole motor shakes. I checked for misfire, changed plugs and wires, checked injectors, map and tps and none of those were not working. I don't know really what else to check. It will be a while until I swap it so I kinda want it running so I can take it to get other things done. Any ideas?? Can the tps be working but not working correctly? Etc. etc. lol Thanks

it is possible that the catalytic converter could be clogged up

I thought that, but I disconnected the exhaust and ran open header and did the exact same things... plus theres a ton of exhaust coming out the back of the pipe...

the catylitic converter is inside the header, running open header will not solve anything.

Oh I thought you meant the one on the exhaust pipe. My friend's cat is along his exhaust pipe. And if it's clogged that bad why would i feel gas coming out the exhaust

His was aftermarket thats why it wasn't where it normally would be..so if there's exhaust gas still coming out of the end it can still be clogged enough to do this?

Have you checked the timing? Could have skipped a tooth or something.

See that's another thing I don't think it's a clogged cat. When I put the timing belt back on after changing the head gasket I started it and the timing belt slid inward towards the head and about 1/4 of the pulley is showing. I don't think this is my doing though because when I first too off the timing belt cover some of it looked dammaged as if it had come in contact with either the belt or pulley. I think a clogged cat would be way to easy for the problems I'm having...
