Coolent hose expanding, any idea why???
Just like the title states
I've noticed that my Coolent hose running from my rad to my engine block in my d16z6 has expanded. When the engine is cold, the hose lookes completely fine. After a while of driving, the hose is all swelled up. My temp guage is still below half so im not overheating. I might be loseing a very little amount of coolent cause my overflow tank is slowly dropping, and i mean SLOWLY. The line is not leaking or anything like that but i do see a new oil/coolent spot on my block that wasnt there before. But i cant see where its comming from.
Any ideas on why or how a hose would expand like this? The metal brades in the hose break? Theres a clog somewhere either in my rad. or my block? Ever happen to anyone?

Probably the material of the hose itself, there is some filaments in it or something, maybe they broke because its too old. Just replace it and call it a day.

how much did it expand?
you know the system does have pressure in it when the coolant temprature warms to normal. so going from 0 pressure to 11psi can cause soft rubber to expand a little.

I just had a similar problem with my Civic.. I had a very small crack in my rad. It would never leak onto to the ground, show any visable signs or even over heat. I couldnt figure out why i couldnt keep coolent in my overflow. Finally took it in to the mechanic and had the rad replaced.. Been fine ever since.
But if you dont want to take it to that extreme yet,, Start by changing the hose.. Its a $14-20 part that may fix your problem. Never hurts to change your hose or even have a spare.

I plan on that.. but im curious to know what caused it so if its a problem that my rad is leaking or i have a pressure increase, i can look into that and fix it.

While you are at it, you should change all your coolant holding hoses, the two radiator ones, the heater core ones and the bypass.
I kept my stock ones on for a about 125k miles and last month my bypass hose finally bursted. Luckily it happened right next to an auto parts store and I was able to swap it out right there on the spot. But it would suck if I was in the middle of no where.
My radiator hose at the top looked just like yours. As they get old they loose their structural integrity and expand more than normal. I suggest doing all the hoses all at once and your thermostat while you are at it so that you will not have to keep replacimng fluid every time you cahange a hose out. Plus it will give you peace of mind.

just get a new hose
there is no cause.
the cause is that the hose is old and need to be replaced.
this happens all the item. when the hose need to be replaced

Usually restriction of flow will cause an expansion like that. If you do replace it you may wish to also flush your system, maybe something is partially clogged.
I saw it once on a truck, the more you reved the engine the more the hose bulged out. It eventually exploded. kinda cool.
Cheers!

or the simple answer like maybe your pressure SENSITIVE rad cap is going bad. not allowing coolant into overflow res.

at goodyear when ever someone brought a car in like this...we'd flush the system, replace the hose and check the radiator for leaks...usually fixed the problem...
