Default b20 head on a b18 block?

yeah sounds weird because it is, my friend bought a motor it was supposed to be an obd2 b18b1 we took the head off and put a new headgasket in it as well as arp head studs, we re-assembled and fired it up. before the engine was running long, it developed problems such as coolant in the combustion chamber. we took the head back off to get it resurfaced, we took some measurements and specs which come to find out match those of a b20. it has a b18 intake manifold and everything else which is what confused me. i'm not sure of where he bought the engine from but it was deff rigged...

so the question is will a b20 head work on a b18 block if so what headgasket should be purchased? i dont see this as its going to work but gotta ask!

The heads are identical. B18B and B20 head are completely interchangeable. Sounds to me that the head might need to be decked (like you mentioned), or you could have messed up the torque specs on the head bolts, or got the wrong headgasket.

Use the timing belt from the block. (i.e. B18B block, B18B belt)

all that is the same. only the jdm b20's with p8r heads are different with bigger combustion chambers and valves.

Very unlikely that you have a p8r head on your hands.
Read the stamp on the back though

all usdm b20 and b18 both use a p75 head - completely identical

Yes, very unlikely, but not impossible...
