Icon3 ALTERNATOR & BATTERY PROBLEMS - B16 swapped eg hatch! Help!

i have a 93 civic cx hatch with a jdm b16 swap and am about to loose my sanity over alternator/battery problems. sorry for the novel in advance.

THE PROBLEM: I was driving my car two days ago and all of a sudden my radio starts turning on and off, then my rpm and speedometer gauges quit working and then my headlights got really dim. about 5 minutes after this happened,my car just completely puttered off and died. I tried to crank it up again but my battery was completely dead so i took it to autzone to get it charged and checked out. when i went and picked it up they told me that the battery was fine and fully charged. i popped the battery in and was on my way figuring that that was the problem.

WRONG. Same thing happened to me the next day except this time when i turned my car on the battery light came on and stayed on till i revved it up a little bit and then it went away. i turned it on and off three times to make sure it wasnt a one-time thing; it happened each time.

Next step was to change the alternator. i swapped alternators and everything seemed gravy till i turned it off and then on again and then the damn battery light just stayed on the whole time?? i also pulled out all the fuses to see if the alternator fuse was blown and they were all good so now im stuck and dont know wtf to do next.

IF ANYONE HAS HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM OR ANY ADVICE IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED BC IDK WHAT TO DO NEXT.

thanks in advance,

Josh

Make sure the alternator plug is firmly seated and that the belt and mounting bolts are tight. If those are fine, the "new" alternator may be bad.

Plug, belt and bolts - check.

I'm thinking about just buying a new one from autozone and seeing if that fixes it and if it doesn't then I'll just take it back lol

btw, thanks for the suggestion Ron any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Have AutoZone test the "new" alternator before replacing it.

Still not fixed but I have one question, what is the actual thing that makes the battery light come on? A dead battery, battery not charging?, etc...?

A bad alternator -- The charging system light (battery symbol) turns on when the voltage output of the alternator drops below battery voltage.

I just got my "new" alternator checked out at Orielys and it's only putting out 11.96v and I got the old one tested on their machine and it passed. I'm thinking of trying to put the old one on again and see what happens since everything (battery/alternator) Is testing "good". If it persist I'm pretty sure that it is going to be a wiring problem...

If everything checks out, do a volt drop on your wires...

I tested the "old one" at autozone on the car an they said it failed, changed alternators and tested the "new one" while it was on the car at orielys and it failed. Then the old one was off the car and I got it tested AGAIN just to make sure it was bad like autozone said but it passed at orielys. I'm confused.

I misread your post. It sounds like the new alternator is definitely bad, explaining the charging light coming on. Go ahead and reinstall the old alternator to see whether it works.

Now I am having the same damn problem! I have a jdm B16A swap in my EK and my battery keeps dying; even after, a new alternator, a million charged batteries and a couple of new ones. I must say, after all this, I do not trust auto zone batteries and their dinky little tests. Anyways, I finally had some fuses replaced and that has seemed to work for the past few days but my car is starting to get a weak start...AGAIN. I am praying it's not a bigger, more frustrating wiring issue at hand but I am afraid it might be. We will see.

Lets see here, one person solved the problem by replacing their alternator, another by replacing fuses, another by checking their engine grounds...would you like us to read the thread to you?
