94 civic vx hatch back ....electrical problem ...speedo
Hey guys ,
I have a 94 civic vx hatchback having a issue with the speedo
I got a check engine code 17 = speed sensor
I have checked continuity between ecu plug b10 -to vss and all go it's getting continuity ,
I also check continuity from cluster speed wire to ecu all good as well ,
Have replaced clusters 2 of them still nothing
Checked voltage at connector of speed sensor
Black wire =ground
Black with white line 11.50-12volts
Orange / signal ..4.5volts
All with key in run position- when checking voltage
Still nothing Iam honestly stumped any input would help
Also ran a dummy wire just to be in safe side /to rule out from vss to ecu / pin b10

Re: 94 civic vx hatch back ....electrical problem ...speedo
I have tested the wires to a good body ground the only thing I can think of left would be the ecu , it's currently running on a p06 chipped and socked ... Everyone eles works fine
On the vss sensor plug I got readings of
Black wire =ground
Black/w white =11.5-12volts
Orange wire =4.5 volts
My only thing left I can honestly think maybe a bad ecu /circuit in the ecu would that be possible ? But it's not effecting anything eles

Both the ECU and speedometer supply a 5V reference voltage. Have you disconnected the speedometer to see whether the ECU alone can supply the reference voltage?

No I havent , I tested b10 on the ecu and got 4.5 volts at the connector at the vss sensor, Connunity from ecu b10 to pin of vss was good no breaks in wire
What wire on the cluster should i test the same one that runs down to ecu the The speedometer signal wire on cluster ? Wanna say yellow /w blue. Wire ,
Would I be seeing 5 volts there at that wire

Again, both the speedometer and ECU provide 5 reference volts to the VSS, which provides ground for the voltage.
Unplug the cluster and test whether you still read 5V from ECU B10. A failure of the speedometer to provide reference voltage would not throw code 17.

Only thing I can maybe think of left , for some reason the previous owner had a Integra cluster installed and I removed and installer factory set up , speedometer was still not working before the cluster swap out
Car is also running for some dumb reason on a chipped and socked p06 ,, have no clue why ,
Maybe a bad ecu could be causing the speedometer not to work , but everything else works perfectly fine and only check engine light I get is for the vss/code 17

Re: 94 civic vx hatch back ....electrical problem ...speedo
After in depth going over everything again and checking voltage and continuity the problem has been fixed ... I ended up wiggling the connector at the vss and one wire that I was testing wasn't actually making contact on the pin in the vss sensor .... Removed and soldier the new connector in and working perfect again
Thank u again for the input
