Default 92-95 civic O2 sensor socket size

I've seen posts that recommend using 7/8" sized sockets or wrenches. I civics are metric and 7/8" translates to 22.2mm. Due to the location of the sensor I just plan on using an open ended wrench (see image)

1) Is it ok to use 7/8" or should I go metric for 22mm?
2) Is it ok to use an open ended wrench?

I used exact same one, might take some muscle, but it'll come off

They make a special tool used for pulling the O2 sensor, honestly I would give the wrench a try unless you plan to pull enough O2s to make the tool worth while. I have even used vise grips before but if the sensor is in there tight that will tear it up pretty bad. Try the wrech but if it starts to round off the area I would stop and find something different to take it out.

why dont u just use an actual O2 sensor remover? just put it on your ratchet i think that'll work better then an open ended wrench. when i changed mine, i used an open ended wrench and it didnt work, just kept slipping. so i just removed the header cover and used a closed wrench (just slide the cable thru it) it'll take some pushing but it will come

I rounded one a little trying to use an adjustable crescent wrench. The o2 socket is definately the tool you want to use.

they make them in socket form or an open end wrench form. all it is is a 6 point socket with one of the sides missing to fit the wires. go get one. definitley worth it

I use an open 7/8 because I already owned one, and didnt feel like shelling out for a 22mm.
Its close enough for something that really shouldnt be on there too tight anyway

most people are saying the same thing and I agree.. buy or try adn borrow the 02 tool-- its much easier. I did this with an combination wrench and I ended up rounding the sides. I had to take off the downpipe to finaly get it off since mine was on pretty tight

Thanks for the feedback. I plan on taking out the O2 sensor after the car has been run for quite a while. I'll use a standard 7/8" open faced wrench. If it seems like it'll strip, I'll cut the wires of the O2 sensor and use the closed part of it. I'll chain a pipe to it for extra leverage if necessary since a pipe probably won't fit over it. Wish me luck.
