Ok. Call me crazy, but I was changing the oil in my SI the other day and could not get the oil filter off. Not only is it in the worse place possible, but it's tight as hell. In the Honda Owners Manual it says you need a special tool.

Im not "special" myself biut I felt like it when I was changing the oil. Anyone else run into this? Or am I the only tard running around with an old filter?

yep..you're the only one running around with an old filter i'd say..for the Si, the filter is placed very poorly for for service access, possibly the worst placed filter i've ever worked on. I used a filter wrench and you'll probably need to remove your passenger wheel as well for better access.

something like this, but i'm not sure what size it was because i already had one and its available at any auto parts store.


i used one of those and a fairly long extension to get it off.

check out 8thcivic.com they have a good DIY but its for the R18's i think so it doesn't entirely fit our needs

that p.o.s doesnt work.
it couldnt get my filter off.
it just ruined the end of it.
i used the strap wrench they sell at autozone,
the one with the short handle.
it worked fine.

honda sells a special oil filter tool that looks just the one above but its specific for OEM honda filters and also works on SOME diff. types of oil filters...honda also sells a oil deflector made just for the 06+SI so u dont get oil spill everywhere...ive been using it at work for awhile now but still cant master it

Yeah i was doing oil on my si a few weeks ago too. Sometimes we wonder WTF WAS HONDA THINKING?!?! they put the filter in the worst place ever... first off, you cant get to it very easily, and second, when you do get to it, the oil goes all over the place!

The easiest way I did it was I jacked up the passenger side and took the wheel off. With that done, you can lay down near the roater and stick ur arm in there and get to it.

I have always punched a screwdriver through the filter and it works great. No "special tools" and it gives you great leverage. My old tc was like the si's in that the filter was near the axle and rather difficult to access. Try the screwdriver thing, and tell me how you like it.

Yes my first oil changed suuucked but after taking off the passenger wheel and jamming a screw driver though it, i managed to get it off.. plus the factory filters are on soooo tight..and it's funny because all the tools that are being mentioned I have and I tried, but the screw driver way worked best for me anyway..

The oil filter sockets work great. But they must be a factory tool. The aftermarket ones do NOT work nearly as well as the factory tools do. If your going to do services on your own vehicles i feel its a must to have the appropriate tools. Would be a good investment to get one for future services

Thanks for the responses. When I get the car back I'll give the screw driver a try. I have on of the filter sockets, but apparently its not the right one...its for the NEW filter that I haven't managed to get on yet.

The car is in the shop now because a jackass rolling in his thugged out benz wasnt paying attention and rear ended me. Hope to get the car back wednesday before heading off to Mid-Ohio for a track weekend.
