stripped oil plug repair
Folks,
One year ago the local quick oil change place stripped the threads on my oil pan. They replaced the OEM plug with a 1x oversize and I've been (once again) doing my own oil changes... The last change I noticed a small drip and I checked the drain plug, trying to tighten it a little bit and alas, it was stripped... Opted to use an expandable plug while I researched options, including replacing the oil pan.
I came across the following product and decided to give it a shot.
http://www.suresealdrainplug.com/home.html
So far, it's worked well (no leaks). I ordered the oversize roll tap and plug. It took me 1.5 hrs to slowly work the roll tap into the pan, but once completed, the plug caught the new threads and went in smoothly. Picked up a snap-on torque wrench off Craig's List and torqued the new plug to 18 ft-lbs. I "flushed" the oil pan with 6 qts of oil, until there were no metal flakes visible in my black oil pan. So far, so good.
