Odd noise, transmission?
I have an 04 Civic LX, there's an odd grinding sound coming when the car is in reverse, it's not a constant thing and as far as I've noticed doesn't happen when the car is in drive.
I first thought the bearings but the reverse only thing seems to rule that out.
Timing belt maybe?
Or transmission?
Anybody have any ideas or suggestions to diagnose?

Im having the same problem, although the clicking noise is audible when I also drive in 1-3rd gear, ecspecially when I let the car idle in those gears. Im taking it to the dealer next week and Ill let you know what I find out. I let my friend drive it one night and he stalled it real hard, and ever since then its made that sound...which Im not sure if it was caused from that, but who knows. As soon as I turn the car on I can hear the noise, and when I push the clutch in, the sound stops.

it's one of the bearings. i can't remember which one, but just have all 3 replace at the same time. chances are if one goes out then sooner or later the other ones will too. this way you'll save money on labor. i wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you're very experienced. i had to switch out all three bearings and it was a bitch. i would never do it again. oh, and you can drive with [freak]ed up bearing, it's no biggie it'll just be annoying.

Well, the way you describe it only being in reverse kinda doesnt sound like a bearing. If it were a bearing noise it would happen all the time, or only when the bearing is in use. Since there isnt just a "reverse bearing" then I dont think its your bearings. Have you ground the gear going into reverse? Have you checked your tranny fluid? What it sounds like is the reverse gear may have a ship in it or something like that.

Dude from what i've seen if its the main input shaft bearing this can cause the crank problems, witch will cause premature engine failure and or bad vibration! Keep this in mind! Remember the piolet shaft bearing goes in the back of the crank shaft! i would drive it as little as possible! my 2 cent's

Re: (skipbarber)
i have the same problem as mentioned by the op, took it to the dealership and they said that its a broken front motor mount, i looked and it is broken. I dont get why it ocassionally happens, and not all the time. To me it sounds like a bad reverse gear.....im gonna change that mount and see if anything changes
