Default Key Duplication

A bunch of dirty ******s stole my key and I need another for my 09 Civic (only got one with the car), and have been informed the key has a transponder so it cannot be duplicated conventionally. The dealer wants $40 for a new key, is there a less expensive option?

There isn't a transponder inside of the key. That's a load of pucky. You could get a blank key off of a website like h and a, or even eBay a blank, but going to a hardware store that does key making (like ACE or True Value or Home Depot), and have one made there.

No, I'm pretty sure the dealer is at least somewhat right. I've been told elsewhere the key has a "chip". I tried having two copies made at Walmart, and both didnt work. They would turn on the radio etc, and the engine would even turn over, but the car wouldnt start.

As far as I know the only place to get em is the dealer. And yes, they have a chip in em.

sorry, but you're wrong.

for OP, go to the dealer, give them your VIN and proof that you own the car, they will make you copies, it's around $40.

Well, if I am, then how come I made a spare key for myself, and it works.

You don't need to jump down my throat, bud. I've had keys work, the way I mentioned.

i've tried as well, it only worked to open doors, trunk. you must have some remote start or something that bypasses it. if not, i feel sorry for you. i believe that the reason most em2/ep3/dc5's don't get stolen is because of this security feature. not flaming, just don't want people thinking the wrong stuff.

I can applaud your effort on not wanting the wrong info. being tossed out, truly I can. I'm in the same boat, in all honesty.

As far as the key, I just got back from double testing it, and you're right it didn't start the ignition. It'd get to the 3rd setting and just click. Didn't know that it would just sit there.

even though we have chips in our keys u can buy a key blank on ebay and there are other ways to program them rather then having the dealer do it ... my dad's friend did one for me in his driveway

im pretty sure that the 03-05's have a key like this:

which have a chip inside.
whereas the 01-02's have the conventional ones that dont have the chip.

My key does not look like that, yet it does have a chip.

So you guys are saying there is really no other way to have a copy made than go to the dealer? If I buy a blank online will the dealer cut/program it for free or what?

I work in a Honda Parts Department. Yes the 01 civs have a chip Key. The first year chip key was the 97 prelude. Then in 98 they came on the Accords. Then the Odyssey's in 99. Then The S2000 in 2000. Then The civs in 01. Then the CR-V's in 02. The Pilot in 03. .

toyomatt84,

Give me your Vin and I can tell you if yours is or not!! Is your Tenths degit in your Vin a 1 or a Y??

You didn't read further down, did you? I already posted it didn't work on the ignition. It only worked on the doors/trunks.

That key comes with the 03 and up Accords lx and ex models. Also 01 and 02 do have a chip. Part number for them is 35113-S84-A02 or 35113-S84-A01. Same key as the 98-02 Accords use!!

well, its not exactly chip per say...If it were chip it would need DC power source to power chip.

But the keys do not have batteries inside them...01-02 keys...

Its actually a voltage divider...when the key is inserted, the ECU measures the voltage drop across the key and matches the output with preset value...when it matches then ECU okays the key and ignition good....

Why it is cheaper and effective method of not mixing and copying keys...dealers can charge more if you lose your key...compared to going to a hardware store for $3...

Sure they do, they have a transponder chip, dont need a battery. If you dont beleive me split one of the keys apart.

Straight from the factory service manual:
When the key is inserted into the ignition switch and turned to the on position, the immobilizer control unit sends power to the transponder in the ignition key. The transponder then sends a coded signal back to the immobilizer control unit which then sends a coded signal to the pcm.
