Default Key Copying

Why is it about the OE keys that make it so only they can start the engine? There's only one metal contact from the key touching the car, so it can't really be running a code. Is it just a resistor or something inside the key? If so, does anyone know the ohmage? I don't really want to chop up my only key to find out.

There is a computer chip inside the plastic part of the key that is coded to match your ECU. If you remove the chip, the key won't start the car. I believe it can still be used to unlock the doors, etc. though.
