1.7 Civic Swap Gone Bad! Help!
Hey guys,
I swapped out my sister's 2002 Civic EX with one from a 2003 EX. I dropped the subframe and pulled out the transmission and engine. I separated the two, put the new engine on, swapped over all the parts and put it back together. At first, the starter clicked and nothing happened. I put the battery on the charger and tried again. The ECU was making some noises... like a buzzing, and the lights were flickering. I tried a couple more times and the same thing happened, then some smoke came from the glovebox area.
Halp!!

No offense meant, but I think you should seek professional assistance before something else goes wrong.

Not sure, honestly. I think it's fried, but I don't know. All I did was remove the old engine and install the new one, and they're identical. Not much coulda gone wrong.

Let's keep those fingers crossed.
To further what Matt said; Just pop the "stops" out of the sides of the glove box and let it fold all the way down. The relays are right behind it.

what kind of battery charger is it? some types are not intended to be hooked up to a car directly because the charging voltage may be higher than what the car's electronics can handle

Thanks for the input guys. I tested the above pictured relays for continuity and they both checked out. I made sure I had the grounds connected and the battery is putting out the correct voltage. I removed the ECU and inspected it, but I see nothing out of the ordinary. I ordered a new (used) ECU online and I'll be bringing down to the Honda dealership to get reprogrammed. The green key was flashing on the dashboard.. =/

Your electrical wires could be hooked up wrong some where, I've done that before... A ground missing for the starter etc. I did it on a 93 celica. To make sure it was that i hooked up power to the started to crank it over and it worked, so i knew the engine was good, so i narrowed down the electrical problem and fixed it..
Electrical problems are probable the worse thing to run into when swapping a engine. Good luck tell us what happens.
