vibration and clunking. tell me it's not the trans
99 ex 5-spd
replaced front axles with NEW not rebuilds from raxles.com. replaced front wheel bearings with new OEM honda. replaced rear wheel bearings with new oem honda about a year ago. replaced LBJ with new oem honda. car has 210k on it. I've checked all the suspension bushings and joints and they all look good.
I've got a nasty vibration that starts at about 35mph or so and gets worse the faster you go. it's super nasty when you brake. it's not a "warped rotor". the vibration is through the whole car, not the steering wheel. it is 100% vehicle speed dependant. doesn't matter what hte RPMs are or if the car is in gear or just coasting in neutral. It does change as you turn though. acts sort of like a wheel bearing. I'm pretty much convinced that it's a rotating component.
before i drop the trans and swap them, does anyone have any idea what else it could be. Only other thing I can think of is the intermediate shaft bushing, but I've never heard of them going bad.

put it in the air, put it in 5th and have a friend rev the engine while you listen to parts of the car up close, it is possible for a differential to cause those to happen.

Hmm.. Simple problem with a simple solution.. It seems to me that everything you have replaced was done so with OEM parts except for the axles.. Just checked out the website, raxles seems to be some kind of aftermarket axle.. One thing about cheap aftermarket axles, they suck.. Sure, they fit alright.. But did you happen to measure the axles or compare them to the OEM axles...
I've seen dozens of problems with cheap napa and autozone axles.. Axles, like aftermarket oil filters are sort of one size fits all deal.. Just because it says OE quality doesn't mean it's OEM Honda quality.. I've seen axles that are too short and too long.. Have the ABS ring in the wrong spot and such.. And everytime, I charge out the OEM reman axle it fixes the problem..
As for your problem, you seem to the be having a vibration issue from around 35mph and up.. Well, from what I've seen, a binding inner cv joint will cause vibration issues.. What I would do is first lift the vehicle up and make sure the inner joint is kinked somehow visually.. Like say if the axle is too short, you'll see a stretched boot.. Then remove the axles and make sure both inner and outer joints move freely with little to no force..

raxles was actually reccomended by a lot of people on this site. They are aftermarket, but they aren't what I would consider cheap. or at least I could have gotten them a hell of a lot cheaper. I used them based on reccomendations from a friend, this site and a google search. The DSM and VW guys like them as well. I did compare them to the stock ones, but I just laid them next to each other, i didn't take measurements. It would make sense, as the problem changed when I swapped the axles. It was acting exactly like a bad inboard CV. now it's something different.

Ok an update
I called raxles yesterday and talked to their tech support guy. He agreed to send out a new axle without any real hassles. about 30 mins later he calls me back. He said they took apart my old axles to check the lengths on them and that one of them was basicly destroyed, real bad shape. He asked if I had been in an accident or hit a curb or something like that recently. I haven't. then he says
"ok what have you got done to the car?"
It's lowered.
"lowered? you're slammed aren't you?"
yeah, pretty much.
he then goes on to explain that honda axles are really only designed to take like 17 degrees of travel, and when you slam it like that you bind the axles up. He said to try raising the car up. so last night i raised the car back up to what would be equivilent to a prokit drop. vibration is basicly gone. I have a litle bit at 75-80mph and up, but that could just be a wheel out of balance. It could also be because I'm hideously out of alignment due to the new ride height.
