Default valvetrain taping

ok ive been wroking on this accord for few days now,it has a loud *** taping sound coming from the valve cover.ive already took off the cover and looked at the rokcer ***. and evrything checked out ok.readjusted the valves too what the book said which was .0010 on the intake and .0012 on the exhust.reinstalled the valve cover and still taps like someone throw a marble in there.whats funny is when u get in the car and put it in drive it quiets down a little, when it goes in 2 gear it seems to make little to no noise.motor is throwing no codes and runs just fine except for the loud *** tapping sound.

ok im wondering now if it could be a broke spring or spit retainer?i have started it with the cover off and couldnt see where the noise was coming from im thinking its coming from somewhere i cant see.ive also tried pulling number one plug wire and trying to start it all is does is try to turn over and doesnt make that sound untill it gets started.when it is started i can put my hand over the cover in the center right ontop of 2 and 3 and i can feel it tapping, then i put my hand over 1 and 4 and i cant feel ****.anyone have any clue what this could be.ill porb. end up just switching out the heads and see what happens.btw its a 90 zccord with a sohc 2.2l F22a.

I hope you meant .010 and .012?

Not sure about the tapping.

I think I have the same problem. The car runs fine, with good mileage and power. The noise bothers me. The valves are in spec too. Perhaps the rocker arms are worn out and needs replacement?

Mine always has a "tapping" in the winter and the seems to vanish come summer. Its accentuated by a cold engine and lessens as it warms up. I think its just the valvetrain tapping due to extra clearances from cold parts and a colder running engine in the winter.

SOHC

ps. also no codes, good mileage... a Honda mech. told me it was a characteristic of the F22 engine...

Obviously during the winter the clearances between certain parts is going to be great since they are contracting from the cold. The valve clearances are going to be larger during the winter, which obviously is going to make the valve train "clang" louder than in the summer. As long as you have the valves adjusted correctly and have the rocker arm nuts torqued down correctly you should be fine. I haven't seen a Honda with 100k+ miles on it yet that didn't have a valvetrain clatter. I'm pretty sure if you heard my car right now when it first starts up in the cold you'd think something is quite broken.

the majority of i4's that i hear running down the road all sound like this.

my brand new '08 civic has this noise. maybe not as distinct as a marble, but there is still a faint tap tap tap with the radio off and the air blowing softly.

the oil change i just gave it has made the noise less apparent. but it still remains.

Does this indicate that the valves were 'tapping'? How bad was the spring. Please post the picture... that's certainly be useful. Thanks!

DOHC engines always sound nicer because they are more balanced.

I've got two 1990 accords one with 195k miles on it the other with 76k miles and in the cold they do sound louder. I read somewhere that this was a characteristic of the F20 & F22 engines (F20 engines are used on the euro versions which I have) Funny thing is, my 76k motor had the timing belt snap and was redone at the dealer with new valves and everything and since then it taps louder then the motor thats done 195k. It sounds more like the camshaft is floating around then the tappets so not sure whats gone on there

Is the sound definately coming from the valve cover? could it be a noisy injector?

Yes, its louder when cold and kind-of settles down when warmed up.

I also have this odd 'synchronization' buzzz sound. It lasts for a fraction of a second, and is audible when the car starts to move and just before shifting to 2nd gear. Feels like two moving gears are synchronizing....
