Default Pic Request (Deciding on wheels) - 5th Gen Accords with Rota Grids! OR Volk TE-37's!

Hi guys! Complete nooblet here - just bought a 94 - 5 speed 4 cylinder econo box - my first car! I payed $2,000 for it. Anyway, I am looking to do a few things, HID head lights, front lip, tein lowering springs, possibly drilled and slotted rotors and some new wheels.

I cannot decide on a size - 17" or 18" - So please post some pics of your Rota Grids or your Volks - thanks guys!

Other ideas are welcome!!

I've got 18's. And never regret going w/ them. 18 inch wheels are becoming standard on a few of todays "sportier" cars.

then why get volks or rotas? my 18's are heavier than stock so its obvious im not going for performance.

I'd say 18's. IMHO I think its a waste to get rims that are less than 17's. To much tire makes it look like you were to poor to get a bigger rim. Tall sidewalls ftl.

Heres my car and I don't think it looks ghetto @ all. This was right after paint hence some of the loose panels.

It is funny you say that because when I see a set of 15"/16" volks or Mugens I don't really think someone is too poor to get a bigger rim. Also, Volk Wheels and Rotas are two completely different wheel companies that should not be seen as equals.

I have 18' Enkei and while I'm not racing or anything,I like the look and have no problem with them. The only reason to go smaller, other than to have lighter wheels for racing,is because the tires are cheaper.Nothing worst than seeing that the same exact tires that you are trying to get are $20-$40 cheaper in a smaller size.

If you want 18's be prepared to pay a premium for the tires.I bought my car with 18's already on it,but if I had my choice,I would rather have 17's.16's on a 5th gen Accord just look a little too small to me.They are perfect for Civics, but too small for Accords.

Right, but wheels such as Volks and Rotas are usually lightweight wheels. Light weight wheels are usually used to increase performance by reducing rotational weight which provides for better handling and acceleration.

The previous guy mentioned that Accords are not sporty, hence my saying, why go with a lightweight wheel if they aren't sporty? <-- That is the point I am trying to make. Your car does not have to be sporty to have aftermarket wheels or whatnot.

Obviously if they are Mugens, they were not even remotely cheap to begin with. I just don't like meaty tires.

I can offer you 2 pics, the first being with 16 inch Rota Circuit 8's, bronze with polished lip, then the 2nd with 18 inch Xtatik Mass, black with a polished lip.

An 18inch wheel is fine, there is no reason to not have one. I don't know why someone would say otherwise. It will fill out the wheel well nicely and looks even better if you're lowered. I have the ability to run different sets of wheels and of course not driving my car daily so I see it as a choice thing, however, the 18's are a problem for daily driving either, my speed6 has an 18inch wheel stock and its perfect.

Tires aren't to badly priced if you look around. I got my Yokohama WS4's for $123 a piece. They were the cheapest tires, all season, and had a very high tread wear rate. I kept my stock 15" steelies and use them during the winter months. Because of this, it increases the life/longevity of my 18's.

19"s are expensive tires. More than usual, they are more expensive than the same 20" tires. It isn't always the bigger you go, but its more of how common/odd is the tire size.

Don't go larger than 16's.

The Accord is a smaller framed car, comparing it to cars now that come with 18's is silly. They're a much larger car to start with. NSX's came with 16/17. 16 is a good performance/look setup.

My old car, 16x7 TE-37 (believe +42 ?)

Oh, and the setup previously was 15" ITR's that just barely cleared the NSX brakes, personally 17's and greater just look a bit silly. The 15's look good but look small on the car, 16 is optimal IMHO. Maybe 17" depending on the wheel.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the help!!

Ok - so here are some more questions ----

1 - What springs do you recommend for lowering the car? I was going to get Tein H-Techs and install them myself. Is install hard?

2 - Also, what kind of simple power mods do you recommend? The car is a 4 cylinder and isnt exactly quick, so what can I do to make it faster? Obviously I don't have the mechanical ability to do a turbo setup!

I think I'll go with 16's btw! Thanks guys!

Read up! I believe there's a detailed thread on suspension install in the Accord FAQ. Once you do it a few times you can do it incredibly fast. I was able to replace my springs on all 4 corners in under an hour.

I think the perfect size would be a 16/17 inch rim. 15's might look too small, and although 18's look ballin', they're heavy and would add weight to an already heavy car.

Yeah man I think you are right ^^^^^ - I think 17" would be PERFECT.

The 94 accord uses a 4x114.3 pattern, right?

Correct

I prefer a 16" rim on the 5th gen, and a 17" on the 6th gen (though I don't blame anyone with using 18's on them because they are a boat compared to the 5th gen!). I just like to have a wheel that I can show a little bit of tire on. It can look really agressive if you get your offset right.

Of course, the other thing thats key is knowing how much to drop your car, because obviously 17's can still look small on a 6th gen (I've seen it too many times...).

H-techs are good springs. I've got them and I like them. But they will not provide you with much of a drop. On my sixth gen, I got an inch drop, which is much better than the monster truck look that my car had before. However, if I were to get some aftermarket wheels, I would want probably another 1/2" just to make them look JUST right.

I don't know how they'll look on a 5th gen, but I'd try something maybe with a little more drop IMO (s-techs maybe?). Of course, if you can get coilovers, that would be perfect, but those can be out of reach for some people.

Whatever you do, good luck.

Hey man, thanks! Yes I would love to get some coilovers, but it is just way out of my budget. If I was to get some coils, they would be some ebay coilovers and I'm not sure thats the best way to go. I'm working on a budget of about 1,500 dollars. It will be about 1,031 for the Rota Grids w/ Nexen N3000 tires from WheelDude.com

I wanted to do other things, though - like a cheap ebay intake - a front lip - HID's - possibly drilled and/or slotted rotors - and other various things.

What do you guys recommend?

See, those look small on your old car, I'd have at least gotten a 17 with a semi thick tire to maintain some of the ride integrity. I guess its all opinion.
