Low idle 2002 Accord EX 4cyl
Hello all,
First time poster here--looks like a great forum and I need some help. I just replaced my throttle position sensor, calibrated it, and re-installed the throttle body with a new base gasket. The car starts fine with my foot off the gas--idle goes up to about 1200 and then drops down after a minute or so to 900 rpm--no miss and a very smooth idle. However, if I jab the throttle a couple of times, the idle drops way down to about 200 rpm. Driving is the same way--come to a stop sign and the idle is about 200 rpm. It seems that the act of using the accelerator peddle causes the car to want to idle low. If I stop the enging and start it again with my foot off the gas, the idle is fine. I replaced the TPS because of a service engine light and a code #7. After disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it, the service engine light is off. I tried to adjust the idle air bypass screw but it is tight as a drum and I did not have any luck turning it. The car has 113,000 miles on it and has never been tampered with so this behavior is new. Thanks for any ideas on things to check.

disconnect EGR solenoid and see if it does the same thing

did it start after you replaced all those parts? or did it happen by itself?

Re: Low idle 2002 Accord EX 4cyl
Thank you for the links and the suggestions. I'll disconnect the EGR and see what happens. I might have to remove the throttle body again and see if I can get that idle air screw to move. I think I have a very minor problem since the service engine light is out but I might have to check for codes again. I don't recall this low idle probelm before I removed the throttle body to replace the TPS but my wife is the one who drives the car on a daily basis. I might have to go through the idle learn process and make sure I did that right. Thanks again.

No change in idle with the EGR connector disconnected.
I pulled the connector off of the IACV with the engine running and the idle jumped to about 2200 RPMs. I replaced the connector and the idle was perfect, about 750 RPMs. I tuned on the AC, put the car in gear and the idle stayed at 750, obviously adjusting to the loads on the engine. Even when I jab the throttle a couple of times, the RPM drops back down to 750--everything is perfect. I have a service engine light now, obviously because I removed the IACV connector. Now, I shut off the engine and restart it. The idle is now around 500 RPM but when I jab the throttle the idle drops way down to about 200 RPM and the engine almost dies. If I remove the IACV connector again for 10 seconds and put it back on, the idle is 750 and does not want to drop below that even when I goose the throttle a couple of times. WTF? I ran some choke cleaner through the throttle body hoping to clean the ports in the IACV but that didn't help. It appears the PCM can control the IACV and provide for a proper idle but only after the connector has been removed and replaced during the current running period. Turn the engine off and restart it and the idle is not right. I think there is something wrong with the IACV and I suppose the next step is to remove it and try to clean if with some carb cleaner while it is off of the car. I hesitate to replace it when it is $350 at the dealer and $180 at O'rieley's. Thanks for any suggestions on the next step.

I removed the IACV and sprayed the ports with some throttle body cleaner. Removed the battery cable to clear the codes and stored parameters. Started the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes without touching anything. The idle is about 600 rpms and seems okay now.

600 is a bit on the low side. If you are sure everything is clean and the tune up stuff is up to date you might want to think about adjusting the base idle.....again be sure to follow the proper procedures. Glad to hear it is doing better.

Re: Low idle 2002 Accord EX 4cyl
I agree--600 is still a bit low. I would have to remove the throttle body again to do something about the idle air bypass screw. The slot in the screw is stripped from trying to turn it. If I can't get it to turn, I'm not sure what to do other than go at it with an easy out and replace it. That might be a job for next summer. Thanks again.
