Default HLEP: 1990 Honda Accord Problem....

Soo with these high gas prices, I have no choice but to drive my beater Accord around, but I ran into a huge problem yesterday.

While driving it on the freeway, going about 70mph, the CEL suddenly came on, the RMPS dropped from 3k to 0 and stay there. The car had no power and the oil light came on. I tried giving it gas but there was no power. So I just roll on the freeway till the next exit were the car just died when I came to a complete stop.

The car was not over heating, sitting 1/4th the the mark, pop the hood too and no smoke, nothing burning, engine was fine. There is half a tank of gas, I fill it up early that morning, drove her around throughout the day, she was good. Not the battery, the lights and radio work fine. I check the engine oil, it was fine too, plenty in there, I put more though just in case, but that didnt work either.

When I let her cool for a bit (waiting for AAA), I tried turning her over, engine sounds like it wants to turn over but it can't like something is stopping it. Its making the noise it makes when the car starts and the next noise it turns on, well, its not making that next noise (if that helps),

AAA pick it up and towed and I came to the conclusion that it may be the fuel filter. What do you guys think? I need help asap. All signs point to fuel filter either being clogged, dirty or broken? Maybe something else?

Thanks, Arith.

Use the Service Check Connector short method to retrieve the CEL code(s) that are probably stored on the ECU. Once you get the code(s) that will point you in the right direction.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to the on position?

Sounds to me like it could be a possible burnt out igniter, ignition coil or main relay. Worse case it could also be a broken Timing belt. But if you didn't hear a any noise I would look at testing your ignition parts. When was the last time you performed regular service on this beater?

Honestly, I don't know what sound I would be hearing for when it comes to the fuel pump. No, I didn't hear any noise at all when it just stop, sorta just happen out of the blue. I just had her service about 2 months ago, so it could pass emissions. New spark plugs and wires, radiator, a few new sensor etc. She has ran flawless up into yesterday.

It's currently at the mechanic right now, awaiting what I want to do. He said if I know what the problem is, he wont slap me with a $80 check fee, so im trying to lower it down to what it may be or sounds like.

Well if it's already at the Mechanics and you can't do any testing or retrieve the CEL codes yourself. I would have to lean towards the ignition ie... igniter, coil, or main relay. But it could also be the fuel pump. Where you are unable to do any testing to find out if it's fuel or fire it's too hard to tell.

This exact thing happened to me about two years ago and it turned out to be the igniter. Sorry I can't be more specific than that.

Thanks for the help man. I talk to the guy briefly yesterday, he hasn't really check it yet, said he tried to start it and the car wouldn't turn over. Said there was something wrong with the fuel pump and that it was leaking oil. That's all he really said. Ill find out more info today.

Do you know what was cause the RPMS to suddenly drop to 0 while driving, not even go back up? That was kinda scary.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Arith &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Do you know what was cause the RPMS to suddenly drop to 0 while driving, not even go back up? That was kinda scary.</TD></TR></TABLE>

What happened to you is what happens when an engine stalls out. The RPMs drop to 0 the oil light comes on and you have no power (engine cuts out). This can happen when any number of things happens. It is usually a result of no fuel or no fire. Or it could be mechanical like if you put a rod threw the block. That usually comes along with a bit of noise though..

For Example:
1) Timing belt breaks (Mechanical)
2.) Ignition component fails (igniter, coil etc.. etc..)
3.) Fuel system fails (Fuel pump, broken fuel line, completely clogged filter)
4.) Main Relay

When you turn the car to the on position you should hear a motor start behind you, make sure you unplug the antenna so that you can hear it better. But the motor noise should come on right when you put the car to the on position. If not then it may be the mail relay has gone bad, I have an extra one if you want to buy it and take it off my hands. Make sure you do research on cb7tuner.com about this issue before you go and replace the fuel pump like I did. I went off of what others said about the car because I was new to the car and didn't know much about it and it took me 3 days to replace the fuel pump because I was doing it in the parking lot and didn't know what I was doing, just pretty much playing around lol! I hope I was of some help to you, but seriously, check out cb7tuner.com and do some searching on the forum first to come to a conclusion!!
Laterssss
