Default Driver's side window stopping *crunching noise*

(96 accord 4dr) hey, I'm going to narrow this down by saying what isn't the problem. It's not a lube problem, rails are fine. There is nothing physically blocking the progress of the window as it goes down. Window is not off track. It gets down about 5 inches, then i hear a crunching noise. Window is stopped at this point, but i can still hear the motor trying to move the window. I think there are 2 cables coming out of the window motor, and i think one of these is either chewed up or binding up somewhere. Does anyone have any experience with these window motors or cables? Window still goes up from that point, but never goes down past it. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not quite as familiar with the newer Accords, but if it's got the two cables for a regulator, then you need a new regulator. Doesn't seem so much on Hondas, but on Fords (where I work) and other cars too, those cable regulators go out left and right....junk. When the cable regulators go out they do exactly as you describe, move a little bit then bind up and crunch. From what I've seen, they usually go bad in one of two (or sometimes both) places. Either one of the little plastic wheels/sliders for the cable at the top or bottom will break in half or just break off, or the cable will come off the little wheel where the motor bolts in and it binds up in there. Either way, gotta replace it.

I wish they still used the good old scissor type regulators, like what my 3rd gen has. Those things NEVER go bad! I've only seen one actually need replacing, that was in a '99 Camry. Very rarely though....

This happened twice in my accord. Basically what happened for me is that there are two cables that work the window. one of the cables snaps and basically the window can't be pulled back up by the motor. however, what i did during the time before i got it to the shop, i took off the door panel, pulled the window up (this may take a little working of the motor so that it will allow the window to move up) and i shoved a board underneath the window so that it was stuck in the up position in case it rained. by the way, it was about a 280 dollar repair.

hmm, so it sounds like I need a new regulator. I'll probably take it out tomorrow, use a board to prop the window up, and dissect it to see what happened. Does anyone know a good place to get a regulator other than the dealership besides the obvious, like junk yards? Websites? thanks.

cant say that i know what tas is, but i took apart the regulator today and the steel cable was all binded and frayed. I couldnt even move the window bracket down the rail with my hand. I found a whole new regulator with a motor online for $60, which i thought was pretty good considering the dealership quoted me $140 for just the regulator.

FYI for anyone who stumbles upon this thread, that center rail is part of the regulator. Take out the bolts, lay it down in the door, and slide it out through the big opening in the bottom left hand side (drivers door). I sat there for like 10 min trying to figure out how to get it off that rail, got pissed, took off the rail, then realized it was part of the assembly. I felt sweet.
