Default the bouncing tach

okay heres one... 92 accord ex. 109k miles, well maintained as i bought it from the original owner who is my boss of 5 years. i have service records and he never had this problem although he babies his cars. it runs excellent until cruising at freeway speeds and jumping into passing gear where the tach starts to bounce up and down and the engine starts to miss. it seems that the problem is worse in the summer and after the car has been ran for long distances. i'm thinking fuel filter but i cant believe that would affect the tach so much. distributor cap and rotor look good and all dist. connections are clean... any ideas out there? thanks in advance.

Ignitor, ignition coil, bad wires, distributor cap crack, rotor crack, even spark plugs can cause these symptoms. Start w/ plugs, and work up in cost. Honda wires are very good and rarely cause problems.

It's not a fuel problem if you're seeing tach variations, it's ignition problem. Determining exactly what component is bad is tricky. That's why shops have igntion oscilloscopes and test equipment.

good luck

I had the same problem on my `90 civic si, and it was the ignitor coil in the distributer. I had it changed, problem gone.

so far i've done the plugs and cap and rotor, i know i'll find it eventually. it's a very elusive problem though. had it at a reputable honda shop and they couldnt find anything on the scope. it doesnt do it with the car in park... only when the engine is under load. they wanted to replace the distributor for 350.00 but i wanted some second opinions. thanks for the suggestions.
