96 Accord LX Oil Leak - F22B2 Engine
I am trying to solve this oil leak problem I'm having with my Girlfriends 96 LX. For some time now its been dripping oil onto the exhaust, while idle and still, it begins to smell very bad of burning oil. When looking up from underneath, the whole back of the motor block is covered in oil, leading up to the valve cover. Does anyone have any ideas on what's up? Last fall I changed the drivers side CV axle...i very carefully removed the spindle and replaced the new axle without changing the seal.. I inspected the seal with a light after i removed the old axle..and it looked good. Could my oil possibly be leaking out there since I didn't replace the seal with the new axle? It's been about 3000miles and the oil was low about 2qts!! THANKS!!

Amazing! I just changed the oil in her and afterwards crawled under and wiped everything that was coated in oil. Started it back up and crawled back under with a flashlight to find my leak. Sure enough..it was dripping from the oil pressure sensor! Thank You for the reply!! You've confirmed my findings!

I wonder if this is my problem. I've got an oil leak also that seems to soak the bottom of the motor. If you park it you see some leak on the ground each time but I'm not losing much oil. I have to add maybe a quart every month or two. I took it to a mechanic for something else and had him look at it and he said he thought it was the rear main seal. I was going to get him to replace it but now I'm wondering if it's that or if it's this thing.

Sounds like same problem, easy to replace, other than a tight location if not up on lift. Just remove oil filter, screw out old one and install new one. Rubber dust boot will probably be as hard as rock, and will need to be broken off. No real need for a new boot. Cost less than $10 at Autozone or Rockauto

So where exactly is this thing? I couldn't really tell from the picture above. Is it behind the oil filter? I may try it as my appointment for the other work isn't for 3 weeks so if I can get it fixed I will just not have him do the other seals.

It is about 2 to 3 inches directly above the oil filter.

Re: 96 Accord LX Oil Leak - F22B2 Engine
Rear main seal is actually on the right end of the engine, it is usually manifested by oil dripping from the cover on the bottom of the transmission where it meets the engine block. The oil pressure sender leak results in oil all over the back of the engine as described above. Replacing the rear main requires removing the tranny, so make it's the culprit before paying someone to replace it.

If similar to the 4th gens, the oil cooler is only used on some models, EX and SE, I think.
For those above with this problem, do the oil sending unit first, then clean the back of the engine and watch for additional leaks.

Blocks of engines should be similar. All part of F series engines
F22B1
This engine was used in the Honda AccordEX and Acura CL 2.2. It was the first F engine to feature VTEC. This engine has a different head than the F22A6 (specifically exhaust manifold/header-pipe as well as intake gasket).

This engine was used in the 1994-1997 Honda Accord DX, LX and SE.

Re: 96 Accord LX Oil Leak - F22B2 Engine
So how the hell do I get this thing out? I've been trying for the last 15 minutes. It's like it's got a hard plastic covering over it with one wire going to it that won't come off. How do I get this off? I think I might have broken the plastic part, but I'm not sure.

Nvrmind I saw above where it said to break the boot off. I got it out. The one question I have now is the old one appeared to have some sort of broken o-ring on it where as the new one from Napa doesn't have an o ring. Do I need an o-ring?
