96 Accord f22b2 issues after broken timing belt and rebuilt head
Timing belt broke at about 25 mph on 7/6 while I was visiting my family in the NC Mountains. I had the car towed to the local mechanic that has a great reputation. Once he had checked things out he called to confirm that the timing belt had blown, and after pulling the head he only saw 2 bent valves and replaced them. As he was assembling everything and turning the engine, he could feel more valves w issues and ended up replacing 8 valves total and doing the full timing belt replacement protocol. We just got the car back and drove it for 2.5 hours and it runs like crud. It backfires, has no low end power, stalls once in a while, and used 4 quarts of oil in less than 200 miles. Temp is running cooler than it did before the head work as well. No check engine light at all but we had a flashing oil light which alerted me to the heavy oil usage.
2 things puzzle me:
the sluggishness and loss of torque could be timing, but the mechanic specifically told me that he had been driving and adjusting it already.
the heavy oil usage, is this consistent after a head replacement while seals etc break in??
i would really appreciate input, I am the second owner, it has 235k miles and is an LX 5 speed.
anyone have suggestions, input etc?

do a compression test and find out what the compression is. it should be around 140 psi. I have not had very good luck fixing broken timing belts when it bends valves.

is the oil being leaked or burned? that's very heavy oil usage. check that seals near timing belt area aren't leaking. you'll see fresh oil at the bottom of the cover near the crankshaft pulley if they are. the seals don't need any break-in.
timing needs to be rechecked/verified.
the temp may read cooler than actual if the coolant level is low. double check (with the engine cold of course)

wowza, that is a lot of oil consumption. Are you sure the oil was topped off? drain plug installed and not leaking, oil valve cover cap installed, oil in the coolant, on spark plugs?

Are you leaking or burning oil? The oil pressure sending unit is a common spot for leaking oil. If he removed that for some reason he may have not tightened it up enough. Its right above the oil filter and is best accessed by removing the filter.
No idea about the other stuff, but good luck!
