92 fun car problems!
Yes these problems are fun because thankfully the car is not mine, its my sisters. Its a 92 accord lx with auto trans. Just to give you a little background on previous problems and the "fixes" that have been done on the car. Maybe 6 months ago the car would have problems starting, as it would crank but not turn over, kinda like a main relay issue. The car gave a code 0 at that time which is faulty ecu. So we put in a used ecu from a jyard supplier and also replaced a bad coil in the dist, the car ran fine at this point. 6 months later, which is just recently, her car had the same similar problems as before, dieing randomly and general tough starts or just cranking. A new Dist was installed at this point but didn't make much difference.
Also now there seems to be a problem with the automatic tranny and perhaps it is interferening. The problem with the trans is that the car will light up the "D4" light as if the car is in 4th gear before you even start it so in effect the car thinks its in D4 no matter what and will not start. However this problem seems to be intermittent, sometimes it starts and drives like normal, sometimes the D4 light blinks and the car will not start. Occasionally the car will start with the D4 light blinking, then when you try and accelerate the car acts as if its in 4th gear, it takes quite a bit of gas for it to start moving and when it does its very sluggish. We tried a different auto tranny computer for the car with only slight success, the problem still appears intermittently...
I am not sure if these problems are some how related but maybe I can get some input on this to lead me in the right direction.
Is there some kind of relay or other switch that controls the auto tranny that im not aware of?
What can I check ?

The car doesn't 'think' it's in D4; it uses that lamp just like the ECU uses the check-engine lamp.
It sounds like you already know how to read ECU error codes, so try that again. Same procedure. Watch for the D4 lamp to flash instead of (or along with) the CEL. Read its code & post it up here.

Is there a special way to check the error, D4, codes put out by the tranny like a jumper that the ecu has or do I just stick the key to accessory and count those blinks? Also if you could list or link me to those D4 error codes (what is the technical name for these?) then that would be great, i will search for them first though im not sure what to search for. Thanks
I hate auto trannies

I believe you jumper the same connector as for ECU codes. IF the trans. controller has any errors it will flash the D4 light.
I've got tranny error codes for my '98 from the Helm book, but I'm really not sure how much they change from year-to-year. It would be good if someone has a '92 Helm shop manual & they could help out.

This is the EXACT problem I'm having! Please Please help... I have no idea what it could be... but I might as well not start a new thread because this one tells it all...
At this point I know its a tranny prob and I can tell you this much too, the trans shifts hard and sometimes "hiccups" when its at a stop. Like the trans goes to nuetral and then back into gear in the second. Anyways I really need to figure this out because this car is my only way to work.
Thanks,
Katie

I am having a similar problem with my 92 honda acord lx also.. just recently on hot days my 92 automatic LX Accord will not start.. or if i stop by a store to buy something and come out minutes later it will not start also.. I know its not the starter because its fine and was replaced a while ago, whenever the car wont start the D4 light flashes.. I was thinking the safety neutral switch needed to be replaced..

Have either of you tried to read the tranny error codes?

It seems like you are describing my car and her problems. 100 % same problem. Except it is getting worse and worse. I am having troubles starting it twice a day. Am taking her to Honda today.
