Oh, I think I understand. I gather you have a non vtec, and that you eliminated your original exhaust manifold/cat and replaced it with a header. You want to know if you can put a high flow cat in place, somewhere down stream, and regain your cat functionality? Yes, you can do that.

Yes. A P72 ECU. Make sure to check with your ref first. If he wants to see the butterfly vaccuum resevoir along with intake manifold, you will need to get a GSR head. I've heard of people passing without it, it all depends on your ref. The best way to go is to buy a complete longblock with ECU from a engine supplier. Don't go piecing it together from parts on H-T, it will end up costing more and be less reliable. Save up and buy the complete longblock from a running car or guaranteed to start engine.

If it still passes the sniffer. Ca has the toughest emissions requirements, in most other places it is acceptable. Understand that with high flow comes less catalyst material, and less surface area for the chemical reactions to take place. So, a high flow cat is less effective at cleaning emissions than a standard cat, but it is still a cat. If your car passes no problem, you can probably get away with it. If your car barely passes smog a high flow cat will make it even harder to pass. The further away from the engine the cat is, the longer it takes to warm up to operating temperature and the car pollutes more during this warmup period. Cat's want to be hot, so don't go too far from the head.

Hmmm... almost right... well, everything's right, but my car is Vtec.
it's a 99 1.5L Lsi vtec. apart from that, you got it right. I replaced the exhaust manifold/cat with a japspeed (U.k.) exhaust manifold. the mechanic told me there was no chance of fitting it without losing the oem cat...
one of the things I always liked about this thread is that people help each other, like a family... now it feels like I'm part of the family! thanks
peace

Bigger cars have bigger motors and spew out more emissions, they require more catalyst material. So, no. You need to get a cat that is for a 1.8. It is illegal to sell used cats, a brand new 3-way cat for a gsr costs around $150. A 2-way cat for the same engine but older than 99 costs about $75. The newer ULEV engines require the 3-way cat, older 98- motors usually are LEV 2-way cats.

well im getting it for free but i see your point and plus its not as expensive as thought, would it matter if i have a after market piping or do i need to have the stock piping on also were would be a good place to put the cat on since the headers i have on are longer than stock ones

Piping doesn't matter so long as it isn't of a diameter or condition that affects your emissions.

ehhh, I'm not sure if 15x8 would be the best...then you'll be dealing with some meaty tires and they doesn't always look the best when you're doing low offset. Maybe it's just me, I like a bit of stretched tires with low offset wheels...I think it looks better than a completely flush tire, not to mention it'll help with rubbing on the fenders.
From what i've seen 16x8 +20 is a good offset for our sedans to be pretty close to flush...you might need a camber kit in the back.
this is 15x7 with a 0 offset, with Correct tire size, IMHO
has 165/45/15...195/50/15 would be way too big of a tire, IMHO.

16x8 will rub no matter what the offset is under full steering or U-turns. 16x7 is the safest size to run. Low offset can be dangerous if the body of the car impedes the rotation of the wheels.
