Default How to paint chrome rims

I want to paint my rims black. The problem is that they're chrome (or chrome dipped?). My question is How do I get rid of the chrome so I can begin the painting process? I am just assuming I need to remove the chrome for the paint to bond, someone let me know if there is an easier way of doing this. Would the AIRCRAFT remover take off chrome?

I've googled this a million times but cant find any solid information.

Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks guys

no it wont remove it..

chrome plate needs to be acid dipped or sometimes sandblasted to be removed properly.

i remember long time ago i had some rims that were chrome and all i did was scuff them down a lil bit and the duplicolor paint stuck on there pretty good. and this was about 5 yrs ago and the og owner still has the original coat on there..

i guess if the wheel does not have any crazy pitting spots or dips then go for it. but if it does these spots will show under the paints layer.

In order to get the "chrome" plating completely off, you have to take off the primary layer of Nickel. You'll need to either media blast them with some harsher grade media (could destroy the wheel), or get busy with the sandpaper.

Can I use a Hi-grit sand paper and put it on a drill disk to sand them down? If so, I need to know the best grit paper for this project. And who else has done this? Anybody with experienced suggestions?

It's the same as sandblasting, just with different media (glass beads instead of sand, as they're far less abrasive). You can do it at home, if you rent/buy a blaster, buy some glass bead media, and have a decent air compressor.
