Default Differential bearings??

I going to be putting in a OBX gsr lsd with a ITR 4.78 FD in to my B16a2 tranny. I was wondering what differential bearing would i need? I have a spear GSR tranny laying around is could i just take it from that i believed they are the tapered bearings? IS the Gsr and Type R bearings different?

The casings are the same, so you can use whatever bearings you want as long as they match the diff.

Good luck getting the tapered bearings (if you have a 94-95 or 96 GSR/ITR) off without messing them up though. lol

So can i use a ball bearing one instead? on acura website they list two bearing under the type R a ball bearing one for $34 and tapered for $50 and just the ball bearing for the GSR? Does the type R differential uses both of them?

Earlier ITR's used tapered.

Use the enclosed bearings for ease of install.

For ease of use and installation, I'd recommend just buying some new closed ball bearings. You'll need the two bearings and one shim (and you'll only need the shim if the one in the B16 casing doesn't work.

You don't use both bearing types though. You use one or the other. Closed on both sides, or tapered on both sides.

OH ok Thanks for your help! I'll just purchase the ball bearing ones then, as for the shims i believe i have to use the Gsr/type R ones. The b16 shims i believe will require machining to them according to Omniman on his 200 B16A build, excellent Dvd learned alot about trannys from it!!

Shimming and measuring with a feeler gauge is much easier than shimming and measuring resistance with a torque wrench.

I've had to get creative on one GSR OBX install, one 18.0mm wide bearing and one 19.5mm wide bearing, it worked and allowed me to use a normal range of shims.

Focking OBX.

You guys are lucky. H/F trans' have no other option than the torque method for preload.

B16 shims don't require any modification. Pick your clearance and put it in.

USDM-EK4*, you'll only have to do weird things in the shimming process because you are installing an OBX. lol So like Mista says, you may have to get creative if it doesn't shim out properly or is capable of being clearanced out with the OEM differential shims offered.

Vinu, they aren't that bad. Just need the appropiate tool and a steady hand. Hell... I even made a piece of steel welded to a socket work to fit diff.

I laughed my *** off for some reason when I read this. lol

I get to do my first OBX tomorrow. I already got to experience the wonderful slivers of steel left in the carrier, and the precise torquing of the carrier bolts, today. "F*** my life."

So... uh. My OBX install hit a brick wall in a hurry. lol

The left-hand threads are not cut into the diff housing for the ring gear bolts. And I cannot find an M10x1.0 reverse thread tap anywhere yet.

Has anyone else had these not tapped? Or do they always come like this? lol

wtf?! that's nuts. nice quality control obx. you will probably have to have a tap made if you can't have the diff exchanged.

Actually i'm running into the same issue, I can't find a reverse thread tap anywhere, post up if you find a solution.

So, the holes were drilled, just not threaded? wow....

Solution for people with gnarled threads or stripped threads of weird sizes...you can use the correct size bolt, file 3 sides down at angles, and use that as a tap. Works for cleaning threads and making threads on soft materials(not diff housings).
