Default Weird clutch... b16a/y21

My clutch has been acting up lately. It doesn’t slip or make noise, just kind of tends to engage/disengage inconsistently. It's nothing extreme, but varies up to %10 of the total clutch throw, and only after it's warmed up... This is a pain when I’m trying to time your shifts and take pressure off the syncros/main shaft.

Now, today it got a little bit worse; all of sudden when I came to stop at a light I felt some very small vibrations coming from the clutch peddle... It was then it became a little bit hard to shift… there's no grinding or anything, it' s just a little hard to get into gear.

My clutch fluid is topped off, but I don't think it's ever been bled and refilled. Do you guys think this could cause it? I'm pretty sure when I start up tomorrow it's gonna work fine again, as usual.

I’ve never touched a Honda clutch so this is all pretty new to me.

Thanks guys.

up...

Also, someone just told that there's a way to adjust the clutch w/o taking the tranny off. They had the same problem I do, but supposedly it was a very simple fix.

Anyone know what this mighta been?

The shaft from the pedal going into the clutch master cylinder can probably be adjusted. But it sounds like your real problem is leakdown in the MC. Flushing with fresh fluid might help, maybe its air or just crud. But if it doesn't help then you can replace the MC.

It's kind of like when your brake MC leaks down. When you're stopped the pedal will slowly sink. Fluid leaks past the piston seal, but doesn't actually leak out anywhere. In the clutch, what happens is your clutch slowly engages while you're holding the pedal down.

it's your throw out bearing. That vibration is the bearing, which most likely is old and ceased, it doesn't slide off the input shaft like a new bearing would. When you press on the clutch pedal the bearing should slide off, but yours has a hard time sliding off, then when you let off the pedal it's supposed to go back on the shaft, but since it's lacking grease on the shaft and the bearing itself is ceased, it doesn't go back on, that's why the clutch skips engagement, it kinda engages and disengages until the bearing got back to it's proper position. I had the same problem. good luck with, you might as well change the clutch at the same time when you change the bearing, why do the same job twice

Update:

Unfortunately, it's proceeded to get a lot worse... I'm getting a lot of vibrations from the engine bay while I'm slipping the clutch to start rolling. I thought it was an engine mount or something.

Does this sound unusual? I can't get it into the mechanic 'till Wednesday.

Thanks for all your input, guys!

Sounds like you need a new clutch. Chattering like that can be a warped clutch disk, or uneven glazing of the flywheel, or maybe some oil on the clutch. Whatever it is, you gotta take out the clutch. Once you spend all that labor, its kind of silly to put the old parts back in.

As it turns out, it was the master cyl causing it to not shift. Now that it's replaced it shifts effortlessly.

Unfortunately, now I have a new problem -- the vibration didn’t go away, and I'm not sure if it's as easy as a clutch swap.

When I start out rolling in first, I slip the clutch and get a TON of vibration from the engine -- almost like wheel hop! Strangely, if a start rolling is second, it doesn’t make a sound... smooth engagement, no vibration… Anyone know what it could be?

Thanks a lot for your help!
