cluster coolant temp gauge into oil temp?
i was wondering if this has ever been done. i have an electronic auto meter coolant gauge installed in the car. i utilized the stock location of the coolant gauge sensor in the head and installed auto meters sensor for my refernce. right now the car has a stock cluster and the temp gauge is obviouly not working because the sensor side is not hooked up. so i wanted to utilize the stock coolant gauge as an oil temp gauge. obviously i can not use the coolant temp sensor as the viscosity of the oil is diferent from the coolant and can throw off the measurments. so i cant seem to find out what the sweep is of the stock coolant gauge so i can get a matching oil temp sensor.
thoughts, concerns?

only thing I can think of is if you could retrofit the needle and spring of the aftermarket gage into the bezel... but if it looks anything like mine does... it's a task that really might cause more problems than it solves. (error codes, interference with other things behind the bezel, etc). Interesting idea tho - i'd much rather have my oil temp on the dash than coolant temp

Why don't you just make the aftermarket gauge for oil temp (which you need to be watching closely), and put all the stock coolant temp stuff back? It will show you when you have a coolant overheat, and be a go or no-go indicator for cooling system health.
Depending on the capacity of your oil cooling system, oil temp is usually what you need to keep the closer eye on.

The OE water temp gauge is not worth dirt, better off not using it all. Even for the idea you have for oil temp. Its just a piece of dirt, at best.
