1988 Suzuki Samurai SJ413 Tin top frame-off
Hi, after having 13 EF civics and 2 DA integras the bug bit me to build this little 2000lbs off-roader. I started with this rustbucket that I bought for 600$, it had been refreshed about 8 years ago but that didn't last.
The plan for suspension is to use longer Jeep YJ leaf spring for added flexibility, comfort, and resistance against axle wrap (much wider). Both leaf springs will be mounted above the axles instead of under and the front shackles will be reversed and welded behind the front axle. I have had custom brackets made by local shops here ready to weld on the frame.
I have 5.13:1 sidekick gears (instead of stock 3.73) with a rear spool locker, the front will be welded.
For brakes I have Sidekick 4 door calipers and vented discs up front and rear disc conversion from what used to be the front ones, subaru master 1-1/16 cylinder .
For the engine I have a huyndai pony 1.6 carb that has been rebuilt, jetted and improved by my friend pat who knows a thing or two about carbs. The intake manifold and head port is an awfull design and will get worked on. Original 1.3 motor made 64hp, will be happy with 75!
Here it is
And the teardown started, took us about 1h30 to remove all the interior and get the body off the frame, this thing is built like lego blocks, the easiest thing I have ever worked on by far.
We were three to remove the body off the frame, it was very easy. The body is the last thing I will do, a lot of welding will be required.
Then I spent a good 20 hours grinding the surface rust and original paint off the frame, got REAL tired of it but it is almost done. I removed everything off the frame at the same time.
A classic
Started collecting parts
I started cleaning, grinding preparing the diffs,
My friend who works at toyota got me a set of 4 u-joints from a driveshaft recall for the 09-10 tacoma, the recall had nothing to do with the U-joint and they look like new and are HUGE!
Yesterday we started building the rear diff guards,
And that is where we are!

Shouldn't be too bad, this wont be a show queen and I tell you, it is a VERY simple car to build!
