Default cylinder/crankshaft condition, opinions needed

So when I picked this block up the guy said there had been an issue with an improper wrist pin install which led to the damage you will soon see. I got to pulling it all apart and here is how cylinder 4 looks. This is looking upward. It appears the rod hit the side and took a chunk out it.

Heres the crank. The journal looks scored or is kinda rough where as the rest are nice and smooth.

So based on the pics my q's are this. Im lookin to go boost. So sleeveing or press in liners will happen. Is the damage to cylinder going to be an issue? Based on the crank is that useable too or is the scoring going to be an issue as well?? For those curious this is a JDM H22 block

If you are getting it sleeved then it is fine. It looks like there is a lot of bearing/journal material in there. Be sure that the oil galleys are all flushed to get the little bits of junk out, otherwise more spun bearings are likely to occur. That damage is minimal, it could look like this :

As for the crank I'd get something different...

It is a B-series, and no it was not mine. A buddy of mine had a nitrous backfire on the dyno. But my point was that it could look much much worse.

poster: as long as you sleeve it youll be fine, but the crank looks a bit off....it looks like it has spun bearings before....i would try to find another one...

oh why dont you go hybrid....im sure you can find an f or h23 crank for not much $$

so let say I wanna go that route then what? Doesnt the crank have a longer stroke than the h22? So what, Id have to use f/h23 rods w/ h22 pistons yet it'd give a higher compression cause its a non-vtec right? So stock vtec 9:1 would be different cause of the non crank. How would I balance everything out. Not super sure, but ahve read plenty of threads, just not real educated when it come to the hybrids...

stock usdm vtec compression is 10:1

if you put an h23 crank/rods and stock h22 pistons you will have somewhere near 11.5:1 (correct me pirate)...

11.5 is close enough. With a little tuning that is a good streetable compression.

but if Im gonna go boost after my build dont i want 9:1 compression? what happens if you run 11:1 w/ boost?

you definitely dont want 11:1 if youre gonna boost....

i would say go with h23 pistons and a thick a** headgasket to get the compression down a bit...on that note the lower the better....bc you wont be able to get much lower than 9 or 9.5 so get as low as poss...

11:1 with boost = holes in pistons and cracked ringlands

sorry back from the dead. Based on the pics aboive, what if I dont wanna sleeve the block? I was think about tryin some of those FRM compatible pistons. With a rehone and that chunk missing from the side will I be ok?

The little dent on the edge of the cyl is not a problem, but how deep are those scratches going up the cylinder wall? If those can be removed by using an oversize piston then you will be fine.

Well the pistons come out of the bottom of the block a bit right there, and you have the piston's inherent loading/stresses from rotation.....I dunno. I would probably take a risk by cleaning it up and throwing it in my car, but I can't advise it to someone else.

Anyone else?

I wouldnt worry about the chunk thing. just make sure that edge isnt sharp.
