??
Does the valve cover say "DOHC VTEC" on it? Does it have a VTEC solenoid on it? Post pics.
H22 long blocks are usually around $800ish dollars around here. H23A VTEC bluetop long blocks are like $900ish.

just throwing this out there... is it a blue top?
does it have a vtec solenoid on the side (passenger side) of the head.
does it run properly? did you even test drive this car before buying it.
in anycase, it might be a hybrid motor (g22) h23 block with an h22 head

its the h23a1 block but yes it has a vtec head on it. i think the h23 vtec had a different engine code from wat ive found online anyways.. i could be wrong.. but the car has a h22 alternator on it thats why i was thinkin maybe they just switched the block out n kept the same head because its suppose to have the h22 normally.

If the head says P13 on it somewhere in the middle of the front, its an H22 head.
There is another code for the H22 Type-S head, but more than likely its not an S head.

Look at the front of the head, between the exhaust ports
Like this:
Exhaust port picture
See where it says P13 HF-1 ... that's an H22 head
I can't remember the marking for a Type-S, if yours doesn't say P13 I would be surprised, and you would most likely have a "performance" head for free.
Edit:
Type-S should be marked P5P I think.

If the car is an SH, by using an H23A1 block, they must have swapped out the ATTS unit and tranny, for a base transmission as well. If they did put the H22 head onto an H23 block, then Q16 racer is probably right, and it was spun at too high of rpm for what the bottom end can take, and spun a bearing.

well if you're getting h22 off of HMO you also have the option of the jdm h23 vtec motor. whoever you bought that car from did a hybrid swap but also had to get rid of the SH tranny. with that gone, you know have plenty of options that would bolt in there such as h22, jdm h23 vtec, f20b etc. just be sure to look at the pro and cons before making your decision and also what type of build you'll be doing.
