Icon5 Second-hand CRV tips? What to look out for?

Hi folks,
Am shopping around for a second-hand CRV (1999-2002) and am looking for tips from you experts
regarding the things I need to look out for before buying one.
What are the big no-nos?
What are the tell-tale signs that the 'currently running' CRV I'm looking at may not run for much longer? ;-)

Thanks in advance, MattHK
PS: I'm based in Australia (Melbourne) so some issues may be unique to this climate and the models sold here. Possibly. :-)

The main issue is that the Valve lash has to be adjusted every 30k miles, or less if its been driven hard or over heated at all.

Ive found through my research that the b20 heads had a casting issue and the aluminum is soft and honda never did a recall or addressed it

i bought my CRV with 180k miles, thinking it would do at least 40k more. I had to swap the engine with burnt valves less than 3 months later

fast forward a year and i just tore that engine down for headwork with the same issue because it got hot coming over vail pass in colorado when i took a trip...

Needless to say, B20's are not the most reliable or bulletproof engines like other b series. Im glad to pass on the info, i never heard about it before I got my V

Another thing to look for that I wish I would have known is checking for any noise coming from the rear end if its 4wd model. You want to find a parking lot and do a couple donuts and listen for any noise coming from the diff. This will tell you if the previous owners have kept up on changing diff fluid. Alot of times if it has a slight noise you can correct the issue with draining and filling it with honda dual pump ll fluid but in my case it hasnt gone away, still getting a horibble noise when making tight turns while accelerating.Hope this helps.
