Well you have a couple of parts to the dizzy that can go bad such as...
Cap and Rotor - rotor screw loosens and falls out and messes up the cap and or the tdc sensor which is in the dizzy.
So I mentioned the TDC sensor it in itself can go out either by adjustment or bending the plate that it uses to sense off of.
Then there is the coil. Usually you know it is it because you have a no start condition.
Then there are the bearings and the seal which would be a noise that increases as the rpm increases. Also if you grab the shaft with the rotor and wiggle it it might have excessive play. As for the seal, if you have oil in the dizzy then it is the seal.
Am I close to anything you are experiencing? By the way what are you experiencing rather than guessing...

Re: sypmtoms of this. (thesmogman)
when i just replaced the cap and rotor i did notice there was play in the shaft the rotor screws to. no oil tho.
my problem is when im in vtec around 6,000 rpms it misfires really badly. almost like hitting a rev limiter. but it only does it sometimes. its like a random thing. and also when i first start the car the rpms go from like 600 to 1300 and bounce around. but when it warms up its fine.
any ideas?

i had the same thing on my 1990 DX and i replaced the dizzy and re-set the timing to 18*. runs great now.
it might have been the timing or the dizzy... not sure.

When you mention play is it when you turn it? there is suppose to be a little play this way. The play you need to check for is side to side.
Do you mean the rotor screw has play or the rotor itself?
Timing and spark plug gap are important in the upper Rrrrr's if the gap is too big your coil builds up until it let's loose the spark, then has to re-charge and spark the next. At 6k the coil is discharging at 100 times a second.
So check your timing, valve adjustment, plug gap, plug wires. If you don't know how old they are pop in a new set.
If this doesn't work then dizzy time.

i just got new plug wires and it still did it. actually last night for some reason it didnt do it.. pulled through 2nd and 3rd no problem, i felt a HUGE powergain when it let me go past 6. but then today it wont let me do it again..
also wtf i found a INJECTOR LEAK!!! so now i have a whole new set of problems.. but its leaking from the 1st injector from the top.. gunna have to get that fuel rail off and do some examining.. lol
