Had a similar concern and a distributor was the fix.

Every once in a while my crx will not start and everytime i rattle my brain for possible causes, look at forums and what not. Last night it happened again so i got all prepared to come back the next day to check timing but give it one last try and sure enough it starts up. What i have discovered is that moisture buildup in the distributer cap will cause a no start backfire symptom. This is by far the easiest thing to check and fix. Every no start ive ever had with this car is related to moisture or a loose rotor.
