EK rear diffuser build
Hey guys.
Im thinkin about building a rear diffuser for my ek. Its a 98 hx, I got it for gas mileage and its definitely not a go fast car, but I was thinking that some kind of rear diffuser might really help out with the mpg's, and look great too.
It seems like more and more newer cars being made have some type of rear diffuser from the factory, functional or not, and there doesnt seem to be many that are available for the older cars, like our ek's.
I have not started the build yet, but I will be within a couple weeks and I will post pics and updates here. As far as the design and materials, I have not decided for sure yet but I think first I will try a simple one made of abs plastic. I plan to keep a stock exhaust, so working around that honkin stock muffler may be a challenge. Im gonna see how close abs can safely be to it.
Please give me any kind of advice or feedback along the way, it is appreciated. If its a big hit then maybe I will make a couple more to sell off.
Thanks for reading.

Check out Ecomodder.com for a bunch of Aero improvements you can make to your HX and keep it looking stock. There are a few guys on there with HXs that are rocking about 60MPG.

i know you can be an OEM "diffuser" online somewhere, it doesn't have a mad tyte JDM design, but it simply covers up the hole in the rear bumper, more commonly referred to as a "parachute bumper"

as it states in the description, you can probably modify it to fit your HX, good luck with your build, in for results

Re: EK rear diffuser build
haha thanks for the replys people.
I was hoping I would get some lenience with the "this thread is worthless without pics"
way of thinking. So thanks for the posts.
I have checked out ecco modder and the like, those guys do get great gas mileage
however they like to completely block off airflow through the radiator, make hot air
intakes, and weird stuff like that. I want to keep my motor running cool with good airflow
to the radiator and all that. So far my best is 49 mpg avg. Worst is about 35.. but that is
driving really really hard. lol.
I like the idea of that wheel well diffuser deal, although I have a hard time visualizing how
it works, and this picture looks like the same unit although its still hard to figure out.
Im not into drilling holes even though I am sure that is an improvement. I figure you can
daily drive with a diffuser on the back, no problem. The only potential issue is ground
clearance but lucky for me, my ride is a 4x4. So making one that is suitable for race
and street use should not be a big deal. As far as my car is concerned I don't really care
about losing the stock look. haha. But if I can make one that works well and looks
awesome then maybe I can sell a few off to local racers.
I think it will turn out looking slightly like this one here but only the section inside the red box:
I can't wait to get started on it, I am about to take finals though so it might be a little bit.
I am also thinking about getting a scan gauge to more closely monitor my mpgs to get a
good baseline and see if I can make any kind of substantial improvement. But I don't have
a whole lot of cash to fork out so I'll be looking for a used one. Anyways I will start it soon
and I will be posting pictures up in here, stay tuned!
Thanks again guys!

Re: EK rear diffuser build
It's not for cosmetic reasons, it's for better mileage. I would like to see how it turns out. I would love better mileage but definately don't want to drill holes in my bumper.

Cutting holes in bumper.....Someone I think exospeed made a something like this where you cut holes in your bumper but they had a carbon fiber layout so you don't see round holes and it actually looks pretty good but I don't think anyone makes it anymore, but it helped with mpg's

Re: EK rear diffuser build
Hi all, noob/lt lurker here.
I joined today when I saw this post...there is a diffuser made for our hatches (now)! I will own one in a few weeks myself. With gas sure to hit crazy highs this Summer, I though I would post up and risk the flame from an old thread.
They are on ebay and have a website "gain-status"

Re: EK rear diffuser build
I'm pretty sure golden eagle makes diffuser plates to bolt into the stock bumper that look really clean. Look at the ek civic type r that was hosted in Honda tuning magazine.

Re: EK rear diffuser build
Yes those are the holes in your bumper type..this gain-status version is a bolt underneath type...it also looks like it will fit with most rear lip add-ons.
