Crankshaft pulley bolt will not tighten...stripped threads??
Hi all. I own two civics. I have always been a fan of them because of their mpg.
I have a 97 honda civic hx that I am having a problem with. My crankshaft pulley was wobbling. I replaced it but the bolt will not tighten back up. The bolt will tighten then if I keep going it loosens back up. Like if the threading is bad??? It does not seem like the bolt if the problem??
I would appreciate all help I can get.
Thank you all in advance for your knowledge.
Ed

Thank you 92ehatch for your fast response.
Do you mean replace the crankshaft completely?
Im guessing that you mean doing this is a hard job?
Is it possible to rethread it?

Yes, its a fairly involved process, although I'd say its easier than replacing the motor. Perhaps you could have the crank bolt hole tapped for the next size bigger bolt, but I don't know about the reliability of that fix or how difficult it would be to source a larger bolt that would still fit the crank pulley.

Re: Crankshaft pulley bolt will not tighten...stripped threads??
How could I find out what size bolt I have and which one would be the next higher up size I would need?
Again thank you both for your help!!

If you cannot thread a larger bolt (which you should be able to)then I would use some jb weld which is drillable and sandable anyhoo before I would go replacing the crank I would stick some jb in the crank hole and on the bolt install the bolt and let dry for about a day and see how that would work again this is what I would do not saying that this is the best solution since the time will come when you will have to replace the timing belt and have to remove the pulley and you will prolly have to drill the bolt head off so I would make sure the timing belt is new and timed properly before doing the jb weld, again this is what I would do.

Talk to a real machinist. That is the only way to PROPERLY repair the hole. He will drill/tap it and set you up with the right grade bolt.
Good luck.
Good luck.

fonkernuckle, thank you for your idea!! What would be the best way to stick the jb weld in the crank hole? How long would a patch job like this be expect to last miles wise?
Knightmare CS-How much do you think a machinist would charge for a service like that?

Depends on his mood lol. They can be cranky people at times. I would think for something like that you should pay abs. max $100. Just be nice and don't **** the guy off and you should be good for less. Also bringing lunch/food with you to give isn't a bad idea. (I used to work with a machinist and bringing food goes a long way lol.)

Im not very good at explaining technical things like this. What would be the best way to tell the machinist what I want... So he doesnt look at me like a dumb***. lol

Just tell him the threads are stripped in the crank bolt hole and ask if he can drill and tap it to a larger size.

Re: Crankshaft pulley bolt will not tighten...stripped threads??
Honestly I'm not really sure. I could describe it as I am tightening the screw. And I am aware that a high number of torque must be applied. Im not sure what the number is.
But either way as I am tightening it, I hold on to the pulley and it is not moving but the bold tightens up and as I keep tightening it it becomes lose.
To me this sounds like it is stripped?
Of course I am open to your input and ideas.
I appreciate you taking the time to reply to this.
