Default Almost grenaded a B16B

Yup, top of third gear @ 8,300 rpm...

Into what was supposed to be 4th. My foot was back on the gas before I realized I was not in fourth but somewhere between oh **** foot off gas QUICK hope that wasn't second and PRAY if I let go of this clutch the motor & tranny don't start spitting parts out. Something let go.

If you're wondering what DID let go.. Flywheel inspection cover. Flew right off ( I think ) cuz I heard something bang up and off the road/car & I could swear my flywheel was never exposed lol

Drove home with a heavily bruised ego and an ear for any weird sounds & eyes on dash for oil pressure lamp/cel/temp. but nothing... Some slight vibration... Expected to have skipped a tooth or two on timing belt but... Haven't checked yet. Been taking it slow hoping I didn't crack retainers or drop a valve/spin a rod or blow some **** right out of the oil pump or oil squirters etc..

What I did do is..

Axles (2 days since overrev incident) & axle seals. For all you b series tranny guys having issues finding the outer (passenger side) axle seal it's part # 224045 pretty sure it's a timken seal. Good part # to know if ur swppng axles & a Honda dealer isn't around or has the part in stock. Don't worry about the half shaft seal (drivers side) as every body and their momma has it @ their store. Part # 4091 is NOT the correct passenger seal. OK enough haha I attached a few pics of the mess a near exploded axle looks like and what not... Would suck to blow a CTR motor/tranny but no more leaks from the trans for now ( low tranny fluid is likely why I didn't make it down into fourth gear).

I made this account just because I'll likely keep this thread updated with whatever happens & I'll be glad to get any suggestions as what to do next.

If you've ever done the money shift or blown a motor feel free to chime in...

Day 4, have yet to check timing belt/tensioner.. Been driving OK except a slight chatter from clutch pedal. Probably fried clutch / fluid but tomorrow brings an oil change & other fresh fluids.

I will also attempt to fix an annoying whine .. (present at idle & driving) will check for pcv valve lol & iacv & that one fast idle thing too lol...

It is of no surprise this thread has gotten more than a few views but no replies... I'll at the very least do some data logging & find out how high I over revved & the sort.

I'll post some more pics tomorrow..

That is called the "Money Shift". Usually it's the clutch disk that lets go if it's an organic material. What happens is as follows: The transmission main-shaft was spinning at 8300 rpm when the clutch is opened and the driver attempts to shift. When the driver forces the gear lever from 3rd into 2nd, the synchros accelerate the main-shaft (which is now being directly driven by the wheels via the counter-shaft) to 12,000rpm (if my math is correct). At that speed the clutch disc, which is directly attached to the main-shaft, can no longer hold together. Centripetal acceleration (erroneously referred to as centrifugal force) is great enough to rip the friction material right off. This usually all goes down before you even let the clutch out to over-rev the engine......if the remnants of the clutch are still capable of accelerating the engine.

This happened to my best friends 05 STi when he let his brother have a go. DOH!

They love to pull the shifter towards them when downshifting.....makes you hit that special gear and makes it feel like that mario cart boost star item...
