Default Adjusted Valve clearance. Valve tap still there. What now?

So I adjusted the valves on my friends 93 si. Stock sohc z6.

I set the intake valves to .008 and the exhaust valves to .010

When we first started it up it sounded decent and then it got warmer and still sounded fine. After a bit it seemed to come back though.

I know I tightened all the locker nuts since I went over all of them one more time before putting the valve cover back on, so I can't see them becoming loose again.

This is the first time I've adjusted the valvs before but its pretty damn straight forward and not hard to do, I followed the helms exactly how it said to do so.

The motor is 'suppose' to have 70k on it but we are not sure for a fact since it didnt have a si cluster on it (no tach).

Where can I go from this?

did you do it warm or cold?
i believe the stock clearances are set for a cold engine...like letting sit overnight cold.

thats how my uncle taught me...never had a problem.

Whatever manual you use, it should say wether the specs are for a hot or cold engine. If it says hot, they mean above 180F, If the say cold, let it get really cold, like leave it set over night or something.

I know you said stock, but does the car have an aftermarket intake? The OEM waffle tubing and air box is meant to to keep all intake and valvetrain noise to a minimum. Honda's mechanical valvetrain is always noisy and clicky in the first place...

I would almost be inclined to say that this is normal... You could check the LMA's but I'm not sure how loud those would ever really get at idle...

i have found that some of the higher mileage motors tap regardless if you set valve lash proper. i just went over a vehicle i have that has 137k, and i did the v-adjust 3x because there was still an audible tap. i will have to just live with it.

Well the car is undergo alot of work, we didnt even have the intake on at the time. so it was just open TB.

I told him honda's are known to tick but hes stubborn.

You will definitely hear the valvetrain noise if it is an open throttle-body, even if they are properly adjusted... After tens of thousands of miles, the valve springs tend to lose their snap which can result in a bit of laziness, which may cause a bit of additional noise...

I'd say reassemble it and be done. If they are within specifications then that's all that you can do.
