90 Civic Random Stalling
Help! I have a 90 Honda Civic that randomly stalls, always when at running temperature. It starts up after cooling off for and usually runs for a few more days. I know I am losing spark when it won't start. I have recently replaced the distributer cap, rotor, and plugs. I cleared out the codes in the ECU and checked it after the first stall and the LED flashed a steady code 1. The manual says "Oxygen content" for code 1. No help here. The car has 147K miles on it and probably need a new O2 sensor, but that can't be the reason for stalling. There has been mention of a faulty ignitor. Does that fail intermittently?
Does anyone have a clue.
Thanks in advance for any help.

this happened to me too...
my engine would just die on the road... periodically... not every day... maybe 1 or twice a week? it would take a while for it to turn over again...
took it to honda, they said it was a faulty ignition switch... i thought it was the 02 sensor as well, but they replaced my ignition switch and it hasn't happened since.

Re: 90 Civic Random Stalling (threestyle)
Thanks. The switch is one thing I didn't suspect. I recently installed a remote starter on it but only taped into the wiring at the switch. I'll do some trouble shooting to check out the switch.
Thanks again,
Tom

Re: 90 Civic Random Stalling (toml77)
Today I was told that my problem could be caused by the main power relay dropping out. I found and removed the relay (that was a major job) and am going to try to do some test on it. Has anyone had to replace this relay and what were the failure symtoms?
Thanks,
Tom

you can find a flat head screw located somewhere near ur throttle body..theres probably a rubber cap over it...but screw it..(tight or loose) and itll mess around with ur timing...sounds like your timing is off...

Re: 90 Civic Random Stalling (toml77)
For anyone interested, the random stalling problem turned out to be the Main Power Relay, cracked solder joints. Replaced it for 52$. It is located under the dash on the left side. (directly above your left knee when in the drivers seat) I think it is installed first then the rest of the car is asembled around it.

Hey. I had a motor swap done 7 months ago. The motor has 12,000 total miles on it, but the rest of the car is 10 years/140,000 miles old. The motor has stalled 3 times since the swap, only about once every 2 months. It is always at a stoplight within minutes of startup. Do you think it could be the main relay too? It's so infrequent it's really strange...
I think I'll change the fuel filter this weekend for the heck of it.
Thanks
