Default 1997 civic hx 5 speed transmission fluid help

ok so i went to 3 different places to get 2 quarts of manual transmission fluid and none of the places had them

all they had were automatic fluids for transmissions and so i thought to myself why couldn't i put like 10w-30/40 motor oil in there?

would that be possible?

and whats the difference between manual transmission fluid and just putting in 10w-30/40 in there?

My grandfather had a CRX for like 15 years and he put 10W-30 in the tranny with no problems. That being said why don't you go to the dealer or here: http://www.handa-accessories.com/index.html Both places are about the same price as any parts store.

You should put 10w40 or 10w30.Don't put automatic fluid there!

Owners manual called for 1.9 - so 2 sounds right to me. I'm about to do this as well and plan to go to Honda for mine.

Goto the dealer and get 2qts of manual transmission fluid aka mtf, don't forget to pick up a crush washer for the drain bolt as well. If you don't wanna goto the dealer then goto autozone and get 2qts penzoil syncromesh. I've used each in both of my hx's but I like Honda's mtf better.

You can find Honda mtf online pretty easily too...I would suggest GM Syncromesh Friction Modified though. Really difficult to find, but totally worth it.

Every dealer is different on price. I have an extra 2 qts of it right now waiting to go in my 99 when I replace the clutch. Just call your nearest dealer and ask if they have any and if so for how much.

I had used honda's old formula in my 97 but left me with notchy shifting so when I changed again I used the syncromesh but now honda has reformulated it and it's way better.

It shouldn't be like $10 for a quart or anything ridiculous as that, I would think $15 bucks or so would get you 2 of them.

I googled and found it online for $5.78 quart

Yeah, I've gotten it for around $6-8 per quart at a few Honda dealers. I've also heard motor oil is just as good, but I would get the mtf. Worth it to me for piece of mind.

Have you specifically used the "new" Honda mtf? Noticed any difference between that and the synchromesh? Cause I would be curious as to the comparison between the new Honda mtf and syncromesh. I've always heard Honda mtf is great, but still a step lower than synchromesh...I'll spend more money to get a better product, but I would love to spend $6 a quart as opposed to $20 haha.

actually I found the "new" mtf to be better for me than the syncromesh but the syncromesh would be a close second choice if the mtf wasn't available.
