Taking Care Of Some Scratches....any advice?
Just wanna touch up the ride so it doesn't look so beat up. My hatch has a larger sized dent where is was backed into when the previous owner had it and along with the dent are some scratches the width of a pencil or even smaller.
Over the winter, these scratches have attracted rust and if I can't fix the dent, I WILL STOP THE RUST. My plan of attack:
1) Use 600 grit sandpaper to carefully hit the rust spots and not the paint.\
2) Clean the exposed body with some sort of solveant (sp?)
3) Tape off the exposed areas enough so that only the scratch shows
4) Spray the scratch with some clear coat (rattlecan) and call it a day
I chose clear because I've seen what red looks like out of a can and it usually isn't anything like the color of the car. Do you think this is going to work or fail miserably?

if your scratch is down to the primer its ganna look like ***, but if your scratch is only on the clear or some(not through)the paint then u should be ok with that process member to buff, bood luck

Well there is rust so obviously it's through the primer. Why would it end up looking like *** if I am using clear and light coats I might add. I am taping it up so that the only thing showing is the area I wanna hit with the paint.

if ur ganna sand and then ur not going to cover the aread with some color then the primer or metal is going to sho through the clear right, now how is that not going to look like shiet? unless ur doing it just to seal and protect from weather!?

i just want a quick fix, it'll look better than rust and function as a protectant
