Can't open glovebox

Can't open glovebox
So about a year ago (not my main car). Was on road trip and put wallet in glovebox cause it was killing me in my pocket. Went to open glove box and suddenly it felt locked. Shook it for about 5 minutes (that is a long time) and it opened. Closed it. Got to destination went to put gps in glovebox again took while to open. Very odd since glove box was holds garage opener so used regularly. Because we on a roadtrip we decided to take out manual, registration, wallet out and closed it.
Well turns out I was never able to open it again. Don't want to keep shaking the latch so it breaks and we are screwed.
It almost feels locked like it is not budging at all so didn't want to shake the latch to have it break. what should I do? Anyone has this problem? go to locksmith or the dealer.
Update on 6/30/2009. I never got the time to try to open the glovebox with the instructions below. My father ended up bring the car in for th e 90,000 mile tune up today and not sure whether if it was wabefore or after the service was complete but he asked a service person about the glovebox. It sounds like he was told the method of opening with a screwdriver. HOWEVER, I think he was got screwed. The 90,000 mile service was supposed to include replacement of the dust and pollen filter. Isn't that the same thing as the air cabin filter? Because the glovebox can 't be opened still locked but the full price with for the 90,000 service was charged. If it was changed it would be opened.
I don't think it was changed.

Re: Can't open glovebox
Try some WD40 or other kind of lubricant on the latch to see if it's just getting stuck. If that doesn't work, take it to the dealer.

Hey man I'm having the same problem, started happening a couple months ago but never got to it. I'll take a look at it this weekend now that I'm free. I'll follow up with my findings/solution if any.

Re: Can't open glovebox
So I finally got around to looking that the problem. It seems that the plastic lever is rubbing against the plastic housing (specifically in the lower left corner). I just took an exacto knife and started shaving a little bit of the plastic off of the housing. Problem seems to be gone.
For your case it may be a different problem though. Good luck!

Re: Can't open glovebox
your screws for your latch may have came loose causing it to be hard to open at times..if you do by chance get it open again check to see if those screws are loose that hold the latch to the glove box
