Best Street/Strip Turbo for b18b teg? T28 w/ BB? Any input welcome?
Have a high mileage b18b LS, want to get it rebuilt, resleeved, new pistons/rods, etc... and then TURBO that integra of mine! I think a T28 ball bearing turbo would make sense, since 2.0 liter nissan sr20det motor owners often use this turbo as an upgrade.. and that's a bigger displacement motor.. i dunno, what do you guys think? I really want a car that's a cool and faast daily driver, not tooo much trouble to maintain, i mean i'll work on it but i don't want to have to do it every day. Anyhow, turbo lag is my #1 pet peeve, so i kinda want boost at or even slightly before 3000 rpm, and I want it to last until the redline (7k). That's not too unreasonable is it? There must be some turbo that could do that range, maybe even give me boost before 3k, so that i could actually use it around town without driving in a huge hurry. Anyhow, gimme some input on this guys, ok?

The T28 is to small. I dont suggest jumping into this and building a motor and everything all at once, there's a lot you have to learn about fuel and stuff before you go boost crazy. If you want some decent boost response with some decent top end go for a straight T3 turbo 60 trim with maybe a .63 exhaust.

Cool.. so uh, how much should I expect to pay to get my block resleeved? And can you reccomend a good place to do it? I'd like to not spend an arm and a leg here. Also.. I've heard the G3 LS heads flow better than the G2.. is this true? If so, should I get one with the turbo?

yes the newer LS heads have slightly better intake ports. sleeving should be around $600. Then expect to pay another $1200 for rods and pistons.

I second that suggestion. Straight T3 with the Super-60. Dont get the T28. T-2-small.

Can anyone reccomend a shop to get my block resleeved at, in the south/central florida area?
Also, how is it that honda owners use such large turbochargers? Other turbocharged cars usually use much smaller turbochargers at similar displacement. I already used the SR20DET as an example, but how about a GTI? 1.8T GTI's come with a borg warner KKK K03 turbo, and are usually upgraded to a K04, and rarely, a T3.. Don't any of you care about all around performance, or is it just about peaks?
Another thing, I don't necessarily have to use a Garrett turbo. Does anyone know anything about IHI turbochargers? Or Aerodyne? Aerodyne uses variable geometry turbine tech, as well as ball bearings.
Lemme know what you think people, i'd like to see some action on this thread.

well, i'm doing a big build up, so i'd say i'm budget minded, but not really _worried_ about it.. i'd rather have less lag and spend a couple hundred more!!!!

those cars come with small turbos because they dont want any lag on production cars made for daily driving. For all around performance a T3 will be fine. Those other turbos are way to small for those motors if you look at the compressor maps and do the calculations. Thats why stock turbo cars are so slow, a simple turbo upgrade will get you massive power.

Yeah, what '95 said. The smaller turbos come on quick so you're really impressed at part throttle but when you're actually trying to go FAST they run out of steam. And you also have to consider that MOST (not all) of these "larger displacement" engines don't rev as high as hondas do. So the amount of air flowing into a GSR at 8000 rpm is roughly the same as teh amount flowing into at 240sx at 6000 rpm (and I don't think they even rev THAT high!) so you can't just assume that smaller engine = smaller turbo. My T3/T4 combination is geting me PLENTY of usable boost at 2800-3000 RPM; higher than that, I hit full boost within about half a second of nailing the throttle on the freeway; the phrase "turbo lag" hasn't ever entered my mind.

good explanation, thanks. So you all reccomend a T3 sized turbo then? What would some comparable turbos from mitsubishi/IHI/Aerodyne etc be? Should I look at some of those Garrett ballistic series ball bearing GT turbochargers? Anyone have any other cool ideas for a turbo project while i'm planning this? anyone know of a good IC misting system? hehe, i have too many questions!

You dont really want those other turbos because it is hard to find manifolds for them. Gonna pay big bucks for a custom manifold and be slower than a Garrett turbo equipped GSR, and for more money too.

A) Driving an LS block, through an LS tranny. apples to apples, k?
B) buying a custom manifold anyhow.. don't see too many good ones for a 93LS anyway.

I think any drag manifold will work for your 93 LS. There's a reason Garrets have become so popular, they seem to run for a long time. As for KKK's and IHI, most of those I see at the junkyard are done for, while the 15 year old Garrett's I bolt right onto my car and charge on. forget about a misting system, just slap an air-air intercooler on there. Staying with the Norm is a good thing as you'll find when parts break they are cheap to replace.

That's cool and all.. but the reason i'm getting a custom manifold is because of the higher quality, not because i can't find a manifold.. i could always buy an iron revhard manifold, but ehhh no. Also, i'm only going to have the turbo on for about 3-4 years (college) so if it lasts that long and not a day more, i really don't care. Will a T3 make boost all the way to 6800 (LS redline) on a 1.8L LS with LS tranny?

yes it will work fine with an LS. If you look at the compressor map and some airflow numbers it's actually just about perfect. what material is the custom manifold being made out of. Was it $400 you said? It better be full stainless for that price.

Do you guys have a recommendation on a good site to learn all your turbo tech? I understand the principles, but alot of the details are still a mystery to me.

I'm looking at stainless steed custom made manifolds, yes. I reeeeaaaalllllyyyyy want one of those MIG welded equal length tubular SS manifolds from Hytech.. a guy can dream can't he?? Also, what is the difference between normal, stage 2, and stage 3 on the garrett T3's?? Why are GT series turbos so much $$$? and why do they only make T25's and T3's?

those stages are just for exhaust wheel. Did you mean Tig welded manifold? I dont think you want a Mig welded manifold.
