Default Exhaust Leak from Downpipe Bolt Hole

so ive got the typical bottom bolt hole on my downpipe that i cant manage to sqeeze a bolt into... and ive got and exhaust leak through it. i tried filling the hole with ultra copper gasket maker and it held for a week or so, but it blew out eventually.

has anyone found a good solution to this problem? i know its pretty common. my only thought is to fill it with good 'ol JB

Ditto. I've just about decided to live with it unless I want to change manifolds.

i think im gonna try to sand it a bit to roughen it up, clean it up with some brake cleaner and try to fill the hole with some JB weld... its the only solution i can think of

my probem is that the tubing and welding on the tubing is so close to the whole that there isnt even a flat surface for a bolt or nut to seat on... i might be able to grind it down (not easily because of the lack of clearance) but i think i would put a hole in the dp. I think im gonna just have to JB it

Here is how i fixed this problem:

I slotted the adapter so I could start a bolt then slip the whole downpipe flange over it. I onnly have about 3/8 inch to work with but it works.

Here is the tricky part. Years ago I sacrificed a Snap-on 1/2 inch angle wrench to remove a jet engine form a Lockheed Jetstar 731 Retrofit...I basically used a cutting torch to bend it into a Z angle. I used it once and have had it for over 10 years. When I installed my turbo, it was the only thing that worked. I do not have it with me so I cannot take a picture of it. Hope this helps...

no, not welding the downpipe to the turbo! just welding closed the bolt hole on the downpipe. which wouldent ruin anything, and if for some reason i ever wanted the hole again, i could drill it out.

but i might try taking it off and try using some super silicone copper gasket maker again, i just used a bead before, this time ill try compleatly covering the area around the bolt hole.

i had the same problem with my manifold. My welds on the downpipe were too close to put a bolt in there so what do you do???? Wellll,, i decided to get a bolt the same size and put it in a vice and hacksaw it to make a stud. its only about a half inch and i managed to turn it about once or twice and the problem is actually solved. no more smell and car is alot quiter

it doesnt leak around the edges at all, only through the hole, i actually filled the hole with gasket maker and it held for a few days, durring that time it dident leak at all, then durring a pull on the interstate i blew the gasket maker out of the hole... so now it sounds shitty and is leaking again. i figure, if i weld it, it will be just like it was with the gasket maker filling the hole, but obviously the weld wont blow out like the gasket maker did.
