Short in my alarm
My battery keeps on dying after sitting for 2-3days. I believe it is my remote starter/alarm.. How can i check for shorts? I took a pyschial look at it the wiring
but didn't see anything bad. The alarm and starter functions good.
any ideas were to look first? maybe testing the unit itself.
I install the alarm myself. it's a prestige 750. first time installing an alarm.
thanks,

Re: Short in my alarm (Teken)
Thanks Teken,
i have checked the charging system as much as i understand. here is what i got.
I checked the voltage at the battery terminals, the readings were 12.5 when the
engine is off. With the engine started and no load 13.7v and with full load 12.8v..
I also placed an amp meter in-line with the car off and got .3 amps..
Also, when the battery is low the alarm starts acting crazy, the siren will go
on with a constant non-stop low pitch sound..
I just replaced the battery again. it only lasted 4 months..

Re: Short in my alarm (Teken)
Ok, I did the phase one of the testing.. With the A/C, headlights and radio on and
revving the car around 2000rpm, the voltage at the battery terminals is above 13vdc. So i hope that the charging circuit is fully operational.
I can't test the current draw from the alarm until the weekend because i have to get my amp. tester from storage.
But when i do, if the alarm is drawing more than spec. current, what do i look for next u think ? it is a basic prestige alarm: two zone sensor, siren and starter cut off relay and remote starter unit in one..
Thanks again, teken,

Re: Short in my alarm (Teken)
Teken, with the new battery every thing is fine. The old battery was only 4 months old. I guess i will have to keep a eye on it. I have no other devices in the car, every thing is stock, only an aftermarket radio. I will keep checking the charging
system and current draw at off position.

Re: Short in my alarm (BK101)
Teken,
i took a current reading of 450ma at the negative terminal of the battery with the alarm active and the car off. Is that normal?
thanks

Re: Short in my alarm (Teken)
Teken, I took that reading from the battery terminal, just to be sure. 450ma is too
high for the drain of the vech.
I will check the alarm devices too.
