So I was tightening down my valve cover bolts today and sheared the head off one. i had to change a leaky valve cover gasket. An on the last one I just tightened them like I did all my other ones but this one broke. Any good suggestions on fixing it. All responses are greatly appreciated.

Ok first:vtec or non-vtec 2nd:can the VC be pulled off 3rd:can you post a pic. this is not a hard fix at all if it's just the head

if its a vtec i could see it being a problem if he cant get hold of another one. those bolts are so wierd.

^honda dealership but it's going to be a back ordered item(my center stud broke) took almost 7 days and they wanted 25 dollers

id gladly pay 25 bucks for one. the fix i came up with is hideous! bolt welded to bolt with head cut off

I'm sorry I didn't think wether to disclose engine type. It's non-vtec and the place of the sheared bolt is on the lower left hand side of the valve cover(When standing over it) above the exhaust manifold. I'll try to get a pic on my lunch break uploaded of the area. Thanks for the help an insight on how I can fix this.

smooth the top of the broken bolt then either try and drill it out (got to make sure when you starts its in the dead center of the bolt) or run out and see if you can get your hands on a reverse drill bit to help extract it out. Atleast the bolt you broke is on the top of the motor and not in a hard to reach area like on the side of the motor or something. GL

so most of the valve cover bolts are the wierd multi-tiered ones. ie they go through the bearing cap and out through the valve cover, with a stud on top and 12mm nut in the middle to torque down the bearing caps. if it just sheared the stud off the top. its easily replaced by removing the valve cover and removing the bolt. if its one of the ones on the outer four corners, they screw out too believe it or not, and have a nut on them as well

If you look at the bottom of that bolt you'll see you can fit an open end 12mm wrench over it and remove it. I didn't say it earlier as im unfamilier with the non-vtec B's. pull it and replace just as of you were taking the head off so to say

Just order a replacement stud (see the link posted above). Install it and don't over-torque the nut next time. Hand-tight is all it needs.

So I'm hoping someone in Maryland can lead me to a decently priced machine shop that can pull this stud for me... My power drill fried when working on another job and cannot get a replacement anytime soon so I can attemp to remove it myself. If any knows a decent machine shop that can pull this stud for me in the White Marsh area to Edgewood area I travel that area often. Any information is greatly appreciated!

if vtec head, vice grips not even needed just a 12mm socket or open end wrench.

This is for a B18B. The images are the best quality as they were taken with my cellphone. You can cleary see that it is sheared off even with the valve cover and there is nothing on the bottom that I can wrench on to extract it that way.

heat(touch) and a vise grips will be your friend here. those bolt's aren't in very tight from the start. or just vise grips may be no need for a tourch. just make sure you wd-40 the base and then go at it with the vise grips.

Come over Sunday. Bring a new VC gasket (unless that one's fresh), a new bolt, and a new top nut if ya can. We'll take all the other nuts off. Remove the VC which will make it CAKE to get that stud off, then we'll replace it and you'll be on your way. Screw $20, bring me $15 so I can get a pizza and we're good LOL.

Holy sh*t just pop out that rubber grommet and you can grab that thing with your fingers and unthread it by hand...

Looks like a part of the stud is holding it on. Can prob hit it with a drill just enough to get the metal/rubber grommet off and extract it with vice grips but that still won't allow us to get the new stud on with the proper torque. For that VC must come off.

this is an easy fix, take the pizza deal, if you lived here I would offer the same deal

VC does need to come off imo for a better grip surface(more thread to grab). but those things aren't TQ more than 15lbs(if that) iirc
