Default what next for the begining of my turbo

I have a stock engine in my 92 GSR except for an intake. I really want to turbo my engine but don't know where to start. Im planning on using the car for my daily drive and will be running about 8-10 psi. The engine has low km on it with 112 000KM, not miles. I am looking for info on what to do next to prepare the car for a turbo kit. I don't know much about turbos yet so any info you can pass along would be great. I was thinking of new headers and exhuast but i don't want to buy them and then just replace them when i get my turbo.

Best possible thing you can do............. READ!!

The best thing that ever happend to me (regarding my cars anyways), is Honda-Tech. The internet is full of mis-information and garbage theory's, if not for the F.I. forum here, who knows what would've happend my cars

Search, read, talk to other 2G Integra owners about what setups they used regarding piping, intercoolers etc. for fitment purposes, figure out how you want to fuel your car, then you go and look for a turbo setup

Yeah thier are several g2 turbo integras on the board. Research and pm the g2 FI guys, im sure they will be willing to help

Me too! Learn for yourself and not myths. people always say what they hear, but learn all the info you can then start a kit. Don't go turbo in the dark and not even sure which sid eis the compressor housing.

Thanks everyone for the info. Yeah i have been reading about turbos for a bit now. I totally understand turbos except for a few things but i don't plan on turboing for about a year so i have some time to learn. What im not to sure on is what i need to strengthen so my engine can handle it. I have seen some people write about how stock internals can handle about 8-10 psi but i really don't want to do that. what kind of thinks can i be replacing/upgrading now?

Actually Im wondering about that as well.

Is there some sort of thread dealing with what engine internals will need to be strengthend in order to accomodate XXX amount of boost.
For instance 92 GSR mentioned 8-10psi
I may be looking at 5-7psi on my D16z6.
Do we have some sort of a primer or an organized breakdown on the pre-requisit's before boosting on some sort of a "Staged" breakdown..
For instance.

Joe Blow wants to run 5-7psi.. this would require.. blah blah blah.. and so on.
Mike want to run 7-11psi this would require... more blah and more etc...
Jon wants to run 12-15psi.. this would require.. $$$$&gt;.$$$ and more $$$..

just wondering...

im glad to see that someone else is in the same boat as me. Im thinking of new cams shaft and gears next. IS that a waste of time or go a head. Also what about the intake manifold?

when it comes to exhaust is it necessary to have a 3" pipe. I really don't like loud cars and was about to get a RSR but they are only 2.25". Im guess thats a little small isn't it for a 8-10 psi turbo.

At 8-10 psi, a lot of people may say that 2.5" is too small (depending on the setup), but it may be right for you. 8-10psi can be achieved on almost (if not) all honda block with the proper fuel management. You will here this constantly. If you are starving your engine of fuel, it may blow up on 5psi. The best idea is to not jump in too fast and actually visualize what your power goals are and then buy the appropriate parts (which may save you money). But don't skimp on your fuel, you will pay for it.

my thoughts and others will probably not agree

stock block are good up to 275-300 hp (granted everything is in good working order to start)
forged internals (pistons, rods) for 300-400 hp
400+ HP, sleeved block and forged internals

definitely get strenghtened Head Studs
a bigger fuel pump (not completely necessary at small boost levels, but helps)
and PROPER tuning and fuel management (that does not include either FMU or "the Hack" in my book)

Its not that simple. For starters, PSI is not the end all, the CFM of the turbo plays a big role as 10 psi on small t3 isnt the same as 10 psi on a huge T3/T4

glad someone pointed this out....this is how u can make big power without sacrificing lots of reliability. running lower boost + bigger injectors...


i would rather run 10 psi on a huge turbo than 15-20psi on a tiny one

This is why I want to go all motor first, then after everything is strengthend, move to working on a turbo setup.

Someone said in another forum that the first thing anyone should get is a SFMU? is this true?

Anyone have any shops they would reccomend for head work?

going all motor first + then going turbo is probably not a good idea. Many of the parts you will be using will be totally different. High compression you don't want, don't necessarily want big cams, a header will just be thrown away when u go turbo and chances are your CAI will too (unless you use that for an upper charge pipe)

Like mentionned above, one of the best things you can do before throwing yourself in the boosted direction, is read and find out what you're getting yourself into, and Honda-Tech is great to help you in this case!!

im reading as much as i can on this site plus a few others. What i really don't under stand is where to start. I want to get the car ready for a turbo kit but still drive it in the mean time. What im looking to do right now is do any bolt on's that will help out. couple guestions i have so far....

1. with a turbo should i get a new intake manifold?
2. what makes an exhaust so loud is it the pipeing or the muffler


i will leave it there for now. Thanks a lot for all the help everyone has given me so far and not getting mad at me for asking stupid question.

Neil,

first thing you should do is find out how much cash you want to spend.

Then determine the amount of HP you want, and how much you may want later.

If I where you, and I'm in the process of doing the same thing but on B16a, you actually got a better motor for boost IMO.

I would get a kit like Max Rev, Rev Hard, or FMAX. The FMAX I don't know much about but I hear it's complete.

If you are going to run under 10lbs, don't build the motor, save it for tuning.

In addition to the kits, you need to make sure you have enough fuel. I would get 550 injectors, Walboro fuel pump, and a Hondata http://www.hondata.com (for tuning)

Of course I'd get guages as well: boost, A/F, oil pressure

This will give you decent power and a basis to learn on. Most of these kits are capeable of 350hp with the proper upgrades, to get there, I would suggest building the bottem end.

the cash think is still up in the air a bit. I plan on having 5 grand CAN when i start this project next year. i want to get over 200hp i know that, I don't really know what to expect from the turbo. I want to build the kit my self due to a few reasons, one being i want an inline mani. so far this is what im planning on....


turbo (can't decide yet maybe t3/t4)
Inline Pro Manifold
Fuel Pump - Walbro
tail wastgate
BOV ( don't know which one yet, any suggestions?)
550cc DSM Injectors (how do i choose on injector size)
head studs
Rev Hard Downpipe 2.5"
starion intercooler
hondata


what am i still missing and is my budget to low? would anyone change something?

also for this kind of setup would my stock internals be ok you think then. Im really scared to leave them stock but i see that more and more people are doing that.
